Thread: Should the league cup be scrapped?

Should the league cup be scrapped?

If you want to really get the FA Cup back to its best then surely it's the easiest option to scrap the league cup?

Liverpool fans might agree with you

The simple way to make the FA Cup great again would be to give the 4th Champions League place to the winner's.

And also do away with the prelim rounds and shove everyone in from the start. Leek Town V Liverpool, Congleton Town V Chelsea, Hyde United V Harrogate Town - ok the last one is still a shite draw but you get the idea. Would make it so much more interesting and could open up the pot of gold for some tiny teams.

Not sure, we certainly weren't calling for it to be scrapped in 2012.

That would actually damage the competition. The FA Cup preliminary rounds start in August with hundreds of teams taking part, some of them playing at a very lowly level but even at that stage it's taken very seriously. It just wouldn't be feasible for all teams to join in straight away. I agree that the magic of the competition is small teams playing big ones but there have to be qualifiers or there would be so many teams taking part that league fixtures would be difficult to fit in.
The league cup is different in that it only contains football league teams, many of whom aren't bothered about it. Leave it as it is but if teams don't want to enter then let them stay out of it.

Fa cup format is fine. A CL spot for the winner won't solve anything as a) it'll never happen in case the uefa co-efficient is affected and b) most of the time a big club wins it anyway. Getting rid of seeding is also a bad idea for the reason above.

The best solution is to make the league cup for football league clubs only.

Scrap the League Cup and we'd end up watching Mainz v Middlesbrough from Dubai on Sky for the Trans Euro Goodwill Cup (North) - it's been shown before, give Premier League sides more free time and they go off globe trotting on some money making exercise or another - nothing wrong with the League Cup, or FA Cup replays, it's the greed behind the Premier League mindset which is the problem.

For my money the thing that has damaged both cup competitions in recent years is the constant bleating in the media , particularly but not exclusively the Murdoch owned media about how finishing 4th / 6th / 17th in the premier league is so much more important than actually winning a trophy. Add to that club owners who don't give a shit about winning the cup because finishing one place higher in the prem gives you more cash and managers who willingly do their bidding and it's no wonder the competitions have become devalued. Even championship sides routinely rest 7 or 8 players in the cup now FFS.

It's such a shame because in my experience true football fans love the cup competitions and have so many great memories of cup ties past. For most fans they offer the most realistic hope of winning something and it really gets on my nerves to see the contempt in which they are held by a lot of the modern football community.

    Money rules, unfortunately.

If the Champions League was for champions only, none of this 4th place shit, Cup-Winners cup for cup winners, Europa League for the runners-up, then there'd be more interest in the cups.

But it was like that before, and no-one in football's bosses are going tho chop the CL and go back to the old days.
But what is preventing a new Cup-Winners Cup comp?

Interesting thought, but that would surely be lower in the pecking order than the Champions or Europa Leagues. Only 2 winners of the FA cup since 2000 would have failed to have qualified for the CL or EL, so it would likely only include smaller teams around Europe and end up being largely worthless.

What happened in the old days? I assume the finalists got into the CWC if the winners were in another competition.

FA Cup winners would go into the CWC.
Finalists would go into the CWC if the winners won the League.
League winners would go into the Champions Cup (2 legged affair from first round to last and no prelims)
League Cup winners would go into UEFA Cup, unless the League Cup winners won the league or FA Cup.

2nd place in the league - UEFA Cup.

Perhaps they should do away with the SIX guaranteed matches in the Champions League? Oh no, because winning a single game in that format is worth £1m!

    http://www.totalsportek.com/money/ue...e-prize-money/

Get to the Group Stage - 12.7m Euros
Win 6 games in Group stage - 9m Euros (1.5m for each win)
Get to the knockout stage - 6m Euros
    6.5m Euros for quarter finals
    7.5m for Semi Finals
    11m for winning it.

Win the Euro Cup by finishing top of your group with 6 wins and you earn 52.7m Euros. Without the TV money!

Would be great to see TNS or some other Welsh club make the group stage, but it is so heavily weighted to benefit the rich clubs that it will never happen

My personal opinion is that the teams in European competition should be removed from the League Cup so you either qualify for Europe or play in the League Cup!

I assume that if a team was runner up in league and cup they'd go into the uefa cup.

Exclude the EPL teams from the league cup and the winner plays the winner of the FA cup over two legs for a place in Europe, making both competitions worth a lot more if you win one of them

TNS have reached the Second Qualifying Round in the past two seasons and have come close to the Third Qualifying Round. The Champions League group stages will take a while but the Europa League isn't out of the question
