even with the blowers air con on it won't shift it
any ideas please on how to cure this problem

Yep. Heater matrix under dashboard i bet is leaking? horrible job for the mechanic if it is.
like another poster said above, feel the carpets in both front footwells to see if they ard wet as this is 99% sure going to be the fault.

Have you changed the bulbs, checked the fuse board, checked the rest of the ring main? If they're all ok then there could be a lose wire behind the switch.
