    Ed Sheeran dominating the chart

He's got pretty much all of his album in the top 20 now, thanks to streams counting towards the chart. But isn't it quite easy to fix?

150 streams equal one sale. If I play a five minute song on repeat, then I can play it 12 times an hour and 288 times a day. That's nearly two sales.

If I open 100 tabs on my laptop with 100 different accounts, then that's two hundred sales a day, over a thousand a week. It only takes about 5,000 sales to get into the top 40.

    Is it that easy?

Fixing the charts has always been easy.
Execs used to buy a shedload of their artists' singles from the shops that counted in the stats, then sell them back to other retailers when the single became popular.

There was a good story about Louis Walsh when he managed Boyzone or Westlife. Westlife or Boyzone were getting tired of him and particularly the wodge that he was taking from royalties they felt were theirs. So they summoned up the courage to tell him they were getting rid of him.

He marched them to his car and said "think you've got fans? here's your fans" while opening the boot and showing it was full of their latest single.

So I agree, it's always been manipulated. But this seems very easy and very cheap to do (if I'm right).

Re: Ed Sheeran dominating the chart

I don't 'own' any Ed Sheeran material but I've usually liked what I've heard, and I kinda like his shtick.

I heard him sing one of his new songs on the TV the other night and it sounded like a formulaic, sentimental re-hash of some of his previous successes ?
Sounded like he's trying to corner the market in Family Occasion tunes - Knees ups', Wedding first-dance's .. Funerals ..

Maybe the rest of his new stuff is of the same standard as his older stuff. I dunno - I'll be the last to know ;)

Charts are a bit of a joke these days to be fair.

Vulfpeck, the half-Jewish German-American rhythm section, who decided to play the system by recording a totally silent album and persuading their one thousand strong fans to put the album on repeat whilst they slept.

To me Ed Sheehan is just a male version of Adele.

Middle of the road inoffensive lift music.
