Are you sure you're agreeing with Bob? I don't think he said every leader of a party is like that.

That's now two of Trump's closest allies in the senate to criticise him this week regarding Syria.

He was elected on a promise to curtail overseas military involvement, and all he did in Syria was withdraw 28 military personnel from the border area who were placed there as a "tripwire". If anything had happened to them there would have been a huge escalation in the conflict.

'All he did was withdraw 28 military personnel'?

    Utter nonsense.

What he did was a telephone call with Erdogan where he gave the green light for accelerated invasion, ethnic cleansing and all out attack on the Kurdish forces that his government had previously regarded as allies.

Then almost a week later panicked in the face of almost universal condemnation (especially from his Republican mates) and tried to half backtrack. Far too late. The Pence/Pompeo mission to Turkey got a few days partial pause in the attack but otherwise confirmed the position Trump took originally with Erdogan.

Getting out of Syria (or anywhere else the US has put its military) is never just about troops- it is what chaos is left behind and who is given a free run to fill the political/military vacuum. I suspect Trump has got to where he is now through stupidity, ignorance and ineptitude rather than as part of some ingenious master-plan, but that doesn't help Kurdish kids being shelled with white phosphorous.

You've got it all wrong, Jon. All Trump did was send 1,800 military personnel to Saudi Arabia after withdrawing the "28 military personnel" from Syria... to help curtail US overseas military involvement.

If only the Kurds had spent a bit more in Trump hotels.....or had oil instead of lots of sand the outcome could have been a tad different I guess!

    It's depressing.

"They’ve got a lot of sand over there. So, there’s a lot of sand that they can play with. Let them fight their own wars" was the line that he used to talk about the potential deaths of innocent civilians.

But wait... there's this tweet from 2014 too...

What he's doing is completely obvious and indefensible.

US forces were never authorised by Congress to be in Syria, so I am not sure how anybody can criticize it.

They withdrew the 28 military personnel from the Turkish-Syria 30 mile border zone.

If troops are sent anywhere it's because of issues of national security. America has an issue with Iran, not Turkey.

If you can't see that those are two disconnected issues glued together - status of original decision to deploy and consequences of deal with Erdogan that involved withdrawal - then that is another reason to dismiss all your self-proclaimed bollux about your intellect and ability to look behind the headlines. As always you just choose the headlines than pander to your boy Trump.

(Yes, 'glued' was deliberate, Gluey! )

The border dispute is between Turkey and Syria. The Kurds have aligned with Assad, and they have Russian backup. If they want to have a fight over the 30 mile border zone, then it's nothing to do with America.

What they didn't seem to expect is the loyalists on the front-line with the counter narrative against impeachment like Lindsey Graham turning up on Fox. Not to praise the Great One's genius, but to say what a shit decision it was.

I would guess this sent the "stable genius" into a bit of a meltdown munching his mid-day big mac and fries as he watched the messaging run away from him on his favourite channel in ultra-HD. You end up with a knee-jerk tweet threatening Turkey, the same country he green-lighted to march against the US Kurdish allies against ISIS in the morning. You couldn't make it up!

Is this the same Senator Linsey Graham who is (or was) a close friend of Donald Trump, yet described him over the weekend as 'an equal opportunities abuser'?

Troops move from north to east is perhaps tactical

    https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-G...n-Oil-Gas.html.

The United States will keep hold of oil and gas fields in eastern Syria and the Al Tanf base in the south under the plan to withdraw troops from the country, the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the Pentagon’s current withdrawal plans, the U.S. will maintain control over the Al Tanf military base near the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border, including by keeping a special forces unit to help the Syrian opposition with intelligence support, Asharq Al-Awsat says.

Another point of the plans for withdrawal includes retaining contractors from private military firms near oil wells and gas plants in the region east of the Euphrates river, which holds 90 percent of Syria’s oil. Under the plan, the U.S. would also move military bases closer to oil wells near the Iraqi border to prevent them from falling into Assad’s hands before any agreements are reached.

The current game plan of the U.S. is to relocate the 1,000 troops from Syria to western Iraq, U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on Saturday, confirming that some forces will remain at the Al Tanf garrison in the south.

“Things could change between now and whenever we complete the withdrawal. But that’s the game plan right now,” Esper said.Related: The Oil Rig Count Collapse Continues

The Kurdish SDF forces control most of Syria’s oil. Pre-war, Syria was producing 387,000 barrels of oil per day, 140,000 barrels per day which were exported.

On Friday, President Donald Trump claimed that the U.S. had taken control of the oil in the Middle East, tweeting that “The U.S. has secured the Oil, & the ISIS Fighters are double secured by Kurds & Turkey.”

The President did not elaborate on what he meant by “securing the oil,” but speculations about the President’s statement assume he is referring to US special forces that have been—and will continue to be—in control of oil and gas fields in Deir Ezzor.

    Re: The Donald Trump thread

But as W-B has told us 'US forces were never authorised by Congress to be in Syria' so surely none of that can be true?

Several posters (The Squad and guests) have spent weeks telling us that Donald Trump is a peace-loving champion of non-intervention. He's pulling US troops out of Syria to honour his election pledge. But no - like a died-in-the-wool globalist - he is shuffling his military assets around, playing low politics with lives and security (and selling out the Kurds) and using US special forces to ensure he is controlling the oil!

    I'm shocked!

Pulling out the troops so they dont fight endless wars. Securing oil fields falls under national security.

I have to be fair it makes sense to me. If the oil fields are attacked the cost impact is huge to everyone, the price impact of oil in particular hits the vulnerable .

If only this region could live to love each other in harmony, it wouldn't need Russian, British or USA babysitters.

It's a good job no one ever fights endless wars over oil fields.

Is it starting to unravel? The people involved are now beginning to talk.

The 50-year veteran of government service systematically dismantled Trump’s repeated denials that he sought to leverage American military and diplomatic might to coerce an ally into a coordinated campaign to damage his potential 2020 rival. Trump himself and his congressional allies did not attempt on Tuesday to dispute the substance of Taylor’s claims, which were based on copious notes. Instead, the White House attacked Taylor personally, saying he was part of a band of “radical unelected bureaucrats waging war on the Constitution.”
