He was a legend but short-changed his audiences at times. I think his gig at Cardiff Capitol lasted 35 minutes with a backing band he had never played with until he landed.

I was at that gig, January '75 if memory serves me well. I think his set lasted 45 minutes and then a quick encore, so was well under an hour. Still a class act though. Chuck will go down as one of the all time greats, a forefather of modern rock music.

Oddly - out of the blue - I found myself looking at Keith Richards and Dave Edmunds on YT, talking about working with Chuck this morning. Hadn't thought about the guy for ages before that.

Seems that the guy was a bit of a handful! but clearly an absolute R&R pioneer and has left one heck of a legacy.

One of my early R'nR heroes. I imported his LPs from the USA and saw him with Carl Perkins during his 1964 UK tour. I loved his records; his chugging rhythm; his guitar playing and his stage antics. And he kept the standard of his recordings high for far longer than Little Richard et al.

But there was a flip side to Berry. He couldn't be bothered to tune his guitar (which drove Keith Richard to distraction when he organised a birthday tribute) which showed a contempt for his audience. He was openly racist: to a white musician "you play when I point - years ago I was your slave. Now....." (or words to that effect). He was twice jailed for sexual improprieties. I now know that he nicked many of his trademark licks from T Bone Walker. I'm also not entirely convinced that Berry was a died-in-the-wool rock 'n roller. Some of his records like Jo Jo Gunne and Down Bound Train were novelty tunes and there was a Mexican tinge to Havana Moon and You Never Can Tell.

So thanks for some great recordings, Chuck - but as a human being.....

Genuine apologies for my badly worded suggestion which I fully retract . He was accused of the act I mentioned, but, I believe he was charged with what you describe.
I wouldn't have brought it up in this thread really, other than a sharp response to Tandy, in an effort to stop him being a tool, which is a bit like asking the wind to stop blowing.
