The first and best National I've ever watched was 1973. The great battle between Crisp and Red Rum.
To this day I can't understand why Dick Pitman felt the need to go out so hard on Crisp. I know he was carrying a lot more weight than Red Rum, but I think if he had held back a little he might well have won it.

I remember the day and I'm pretty sure we beat Preston 4-0 that day.
As a racing man I remember it well. I'd have been 21 at the time and no doubt had stopped on my way through Grange to place a bet. I certainly didn't pick Foinavon but recall playing at Sevenoaks Park that day for St Pats against rivals Grange Quins.
So, I was close enough to Ninian but have no idea who City were playing that day.

It was Preston who we beat 4-0 on this day fifty years ago. I was in my normal place behind the goal at the back of the Boy's enclosure in the Grange End and on the other side of the fence was a man who was listening to the race on his radio. When the pile up occurred, he kept on saying that he'd never heard of the horse that was now in the lead and neither had the group around him who were now ignoring the match to listen to the race. I got to see the pile up on the news when I got home (not sure I'd ever seen the race in it's entirety before - I've always said Foinavon was hanging on at the end, but, watching that video, it was a bit more comfortable than I thought it was) and it was even worse than I thought it would be. Thanks to Hilts for posting those colour pictures which show that, as often is the case when lots of horses fall at a fence, it was one of the loose horses that created the problem.
