Thread: Russell's Paradox

  1. #1

    Russell's Paradox

    Not Slade, Bertrand.

Can anybody solve this for me without referring to complicated things like Classes and Type Theory.

A barber in a village shaves all men who don't shave themselves.

The barber is also a member of the village. However, if he shaves himself he doesn't, because he only shaves those who don't shave themselves. If he doesn't shave himself, he does because he shaves all those who don't shave themselves.

Just wondering like. Feel free to turn this into a pun thread instead.

This is all about the classes and type theory. Hope this helps.

    Re: Russell's Paradox

you have defined your own set, ergo it becomes a paradox by virtue of the fact you have defined it as such, ergo such a barber does not exist.

it is a paradox of self reference which when referencing a negative position can be deemed to be false. that is, it doesn't follow that it is true that the barber only shaves those who don't shave themselves.

In simple terms, you can't make something/somebody exist under these contradictory terms? That is, it is essentially based on the formation of invalid sets, or summit like that?

It's not a riddle. I should have stated people not men, but did mention in any case the barber was a 'he'.
