Here's one out of left field. Having owned several decent guitars including a 1963 Strat the one with the best action was a Marlin Loner bought in 1988. You probably can't buy them now but it the only guitar I currently own.

My guitar (mine is burgundy) http://www.vigierguitars.com/page/fi...hp?id_prod=227
Pity I can"t play it like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJi8iSpzq9I
After 30 years playing listening to this often makes me want to give up.
    Look at her picking !

I admire other players and love to try to cop some grooves or riffs. But none has ever made me want to give up. :)
They play like they do, I play like me.
That's all there is to it as far as I'm concerned.

TBH I've never been into shredding though.
Dave Gilmour is about my pace and - after all these years - he is still the player that I admire most from the 'guitar-slinger'/rock genre.

I'm forever changing my mind regarding my fav axe man, currently it's Steve Hackett, agree regarding shredding, so many are good at it, it's become boring!!!

Shredding isn"t my favourite either, feel, tone etc are much more important to me than how quickly I can play a certain number of notes but her technique is exceptional & very understated IMHO.
As Dave Gilmour has been mentioned this is her at 14 years of age playing the solo from Floyd"s Comfortably Numb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_P-t0idgqI
The guitarist I admire most of all is Gary Moore, a guitarist who had it all IMO from blues to heavy rock, emotion, feel, tone, blistering speed when he wanted to.
    Taken to young, RIP

Moore's playing was beyond superb. He had it all, and he could do it all - and he was still melodic and entertaining.
Other players aside from Gilmour and Moore who's style I admire, or have admired a lot -

    John Squire
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Billy Gibbons
    Angus Y
    Malcolm Y
    Wilko Johnson
    Robbo & Gorham
    Prince
    Strummer\Jones\Simonon
    Pino Palladino
    Norman Watt-Roy
    JJ Burnel
    Larry Graham
    Peter Green
    Rory Gallagher

Jeez, it just goes on .. I'd better stop there ..

Rory Gallagher was one of my early influences
I think that JJ Burnel has an absolutely fantastic tone & is very underrated.
Pino another fantastic bassist, 2 years above me in school iirc.
As you say the list just goes on & on.
Besides the "name" players you only have to go on youtube to see/hear fantastic players that are relatively or completely unheard of.

Pino is obviously a top player but I don't really care for his style. JJ Burnel is an amazing bass player and the first player I "noticed". Love his style and his tone. Shall we move onto bass players now?

    JJ Burnel
    Geddy Lee
    John Entwistle
    Peter Hook

I was always an admirer of Adam Clayton's simple, linear bass lines. I'm also a fan of Kim Deal's style.

Re: Cranes in Cardiff has gone, I see

I've had the pleasure of seeing Joe Satriani and Joe Bonamassa in the last eighteen months. I didn't hear a false or a fluffed note in either show. Satch in particular was amazingly fluent and technical. The Classic Rock Show at St David's earlier this year had two very talented lead guitarists who changed instruments for every number. Unless they were all set-up the same, I wonder at how they could instantly adapt to each instrument. And later this year, I'm really looking forward to seeing Steve Morse.....
