Now they're coming for our penalties.

The sooner we're out of Europe and we can get back to proper British rules up the better.

    I like it

Personally I'd do away with pens and go back to extra time golden goal with a twist. Take 2 players off at the end of 90 then 1 every 10 minutes until someone scores.

Involves more skill and tactics than a penalty shoot out

What happens when it's just the 2 keepers on the pitch?

You play with 7 minimum to 30 mins max then go to a penalty shoot out

What if one of the teams has previously had a man sent off?

Let's just scrap the penalties and toss a coin like they used to.

John Terry would still be allowed to put on his kit for the toss up if he wasn't in the squad.

They play with 1 less obviously

Yeah, but do they only then have a maximum of 10 minutes of extra time because they'd be down to 7 men sooner? Not sure your idea is a goer TBH

It's not rocket science you take 2 men off after 90 mins so if someone is sent off and it's 11 v 10 it then it becomes 9 v 8, 8v 7, 7 v 6. 3 x 10 min periods. If after 30 mins maximum still can't separate you go to pens.

Or 15 mins per 2 extra time periods as now and go 9v9 first period then if no golden goal then 7v7.

No more extra time than now and more likely to get a winner especially if golden goal.

Nah, all sounds a bit convoluted to me. Keep thinking up the ideas though, something will stick sooner or later.

Better to adopt the hockey-style shoot-out.

One player takes ball from eg, centre spot, has a fixed time to beat keeper.

Mad as hatter me, what about taking the penalties "FIRST"

    Just putting it out there.

    ie:---- Before KO.

Undue pressure on one side to win, the other side to 'park the bus' ?

But, (NSASWB), if the park the bus side conceded, then game on.

What about the FIRST side to score wins if tied after 120mins.

    What about "CORNER COUNT"

They trialled that in a cup comp in the 70s (can't recall which one.. Intertoto or some crap, probably.

All of these ideas are worse than a pelanty shootout, and pelanties are hardly perfect.

If the scores remain level after extra time simply let the teams share the spoils, trophies for everyone!

Approximately 60% of penalty shootouts are won by the team going first. If this makes it more even, then it is a good idea. It is more like a tie break in tennis. Over 70% of penalties are scored to win the tie but if you have to score to stay in, this drops to about 30%.

    Alternatively, nobody wins.

If you're not good enough to win the game after two hours then you don't deserve the trophy.

    Next time, make more effort.
