I prefer Caroline Street, but I don't mind Chippy lane as an alternative (although it's much less chippyish or lane like than in its heyday).
The guy I sit next to in work though calls it "chip shop alley" which is completely unacceptable behaviour.

Although I despise anything other than Caroline Street, I did hear a story that Chippy Lane derived from the old nickname Cheapy Lane. This comes from historical references to people seeking the cheapest food in the area.
I'm guessing you were told this by some student. Or some fat old slapper wearing a two size too small rugby shirt and a sparkly pink cowboy hat?
