    Maths help Ratios

Trying to help my daughter with her maths exam coming up and would just like help with this question and the answer and how it is worked out?

Lotty and raefel decide to enter a prize draw.
They agree to share any money they win in the ratio of 2;3 respectively.
After winning a total of £2000. They think again and decide that Lotty's share should be increased by 30%.

1 Raefel thinks that his share will be reduced by 30%.
Without any calculation explain why raefel thinking is incorrect.

    2. Calculate the amount of money Lotty wins after the decision is made to increase her share.

    We got, 2000 divide by 5 = 400
    Lotty 2x400 =800
    10% = 80
    30% =240

    Lotty 800 + 240=1040

3 find the ratio that is now used to share the money between Lotty and raefel.
Express your answer in its simplest form.

    Lotty £1040
    Raefel £960

    Lotty's winnings raefel winnings = ?

    a) Raefels share will reduce by the same £££ as Lottys share increases
    b) 30% of Lottys share is a different amount from 30% of Raefels
    c) so it can't be true.

    2. Calculate the amount of money Lotty wins after the decision is made to increase her share.

    Lotty 800 + 240=1040

    Agreed

3 find the ratio that is now used to share the money between Lotty and raefel.
Express your answer in its simplest form.

    Lotty £1040
    Raefel £960

    Lotty's winnings raefel winnings = ?

That's right, 1040:940 is the ratio, but that's not the simplest form. Highest common denominator is 80, dividing throughout by 80 gives ratio of 13:12
    .

    Re: Maths help Ratios

    One way to get there:

Pick an easy number they're both divisible by, like 20.

    1040/20 = 52
    960/20 = 48

Now try again with the highest number that goes into both of these. I.e 4.

    Ratio = 13/12.

Probably better/quicker ways to work it out mind.

Get trying to do now thanks for that, but trying to work it out without a calculator is another thing. Thanks for your time much appreciated

It is, but you don't have to go straight to the 80 option, they're both even numbers, you can just keep dividing by 2, until it won't go anymore, or 10 may be better to start, still end up at 13:12 eventually, and no need for a calculator.

They agree to share any money they win in the ratio of 2;3 respectively.
After winning a total of £2000. They think again and decide that Lotty's share should be increased by 30%.

So they're splitting money 60/40 in favor of Rafael.
Lotty gets £800 and Rafael gets £1200

Then they decide to give Lotty 30% more. 30$ of £800 = $240

1 Raefel thinks that his share will be reduced by 30%.
Without any calculation explain why raefel thinking is incorrect.
Beacuse 30% of Lotty's share is only 20% of Rafael's share.

Divide both numbers by the highest common denominator (80)

    Lotty £1040 /80 = 13
    Raefel £960 /80 = 12

You know lotty has 1040 therefore Rafael must have 960, the difference being 80.

    80 into 960 is 12
    80 into 1040 is 13

    take it in steps

    1040 : 960 divide by ten =
    104 : 96 divide by 2 =
    52 : 48 divide by 2 =
    26 : 24 divide by 2 =
    13 : 12

This question is null and void because children just aren't named Lotty and Raefel.

1 Raefal will get 60% of winnings originally. A 30% increase in winnings for Lotty will not mean she gets 70%, it will be 30% of 40%. It will also not mean that Lotty will only get 30% instead of the original 60%.

2 Lotty's original winnings are 40%. She gets an extra 30%, taking her winnings to 52%. So, she will win 52% of £2000. In other words, £1040.

3 Lotty gets 52% and Rafael gets 48%
cancelling down (divide by 4) it is a ratio of 13:12

Raefel should refer back to the syndicate agreement they took out originally. They're drawn up to avoid this sort of thing.

    Rafael is being very generous.

    I wonder why?

Raphael is bad at maths and Lotty is taking advantage
