Serbia leaving massive gaps at the back....if only there was someone with pace running into them
Good result under any other circumstances. May have made the overall group beyond us now
Usual case of plucky Wales. Serbian defence wide open on times yet largely untroubled with no-one able to take advantage sadly.
It's a frustrating watch at the moment because we are so close to being a side that's properly competitive on a big stage: there was a nice bit of link up between Ramsey and Allen which reminded us of what we do at our best and created a good chance; there was the moment Sam Vokes believed himself to be Gareth Bale, winning the ball in his own half, knocking it past a player and using his pace and strength to win us good position; Tom Lawrence looked quick and confident; Joe Allen looked to be everywhere; and Ben Davies attacking from left CB may be our next weapon.
While a draw is a good but disappointing result, no team has stolen a march on any other today (apart from Ireland and Serbia ticking one extra round of games off) and 10 points from the next 4 games will hopefully see us go through.
Wales will win the last 4 games and qualify
dropped 2 points tonight
We sat back far too deep as the 2nd half started, only when Serbia scored did we start to play again
When we qualified for the Euros, we did it on the back of a strong defence that kept 7 clean sheets in qualification. Defensively we've not been as good, so if we harbour any thoughts of winning 3 or 4 games we've got to start scoring more goals than we have been. Against Austria and the Republic of Ireland, the onus is going to be on us to take the game to them, which is hardly our strength. Take the "fill-yer-boots" job against Andorra out of the equation and we're averaging only a goal a game at home in qualifiers since October 2014. On a positive note, we're unbeaten in qualifiers for almost 2 years, which is a good thing.
We really struggle to score from open play and that means if you switch off for a second at the back, you get punished, which is exactly what happened last night. On a more positive note, Ramsey proved last night he's a cut above. With Ramsey and Bale in form, it should look more promising. I can't believe he didn't turn to Lawrence until the 85th last night, we really needed some relief going the other way, Rambo and Allen had nobody to pass to at times.
Could say we switched off but the Serbian movement was great and the finish was quality. Mitrovic is one of those players who you love if they play for you but hate if they don't. That was his 5th goal in 5 games for Serbia during this campaign.
We were crying out for someone to run behind last night when Ramsey had the ball at feet, but he had to hold it up for 4-5 seconds to wait for the others to catch up. Lawrence would've been perfect. Vokes was brilliant for an hour and then blew himself out. But yes, highlighted Ramsey's brilliance because he was doing 2 or 3 different positions all night.
It's a good finish but someone doesn't track Prijovic, I don't think Davies (who is normally excellent) covers himself in glory, and we really were at 6s and 7s back there. Either way, we're usually very solid at the back but it's silly mistakes that are costing us.
I do think our lack of goals is very worrying though, Vokes did well though, he had a fairly thankless task last night and I don't think I've ever seen him take someone on before!
