Tim Farron resigns as Lib Dem leader

    His statement includes:

“The consequences of the focus on my faith is that I have found myself torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader. A better, wiser person than me may have been able to deal with this more successfully, to have remained faithful to Christ while leading a political party in the current environment. To be a political leader - especially of a progressive, liberal party in 2017 - and to live as a committed Christian, to hold faithfully to the Bible’s teaching, has felt impossible for me.”

If he can't reconcile his medieval religious beliefs with his party's progressive social policies how can he continue to function as a Lib Dem MP?

Sorry Jon but if you quoted his full speech then you will see that his personal religious beliefs never interefered with his political views on equality and this has been clearly evident in his political career.

It seems to me that it's great to defend gay people, muslims or any other group but christians are the scum of the earth no matter what and should be hung drawn and quartered!

Farron has been faithful to his beliefs ( after the Election mind you ) and done the decent thing.

God squad nerd May however ( I always worry about people with too much religion ) has felt comfortable signing up
with the UK's biggest bunch of bigots in a desperate attempt to keep herself in power.

    Shame on you May !

Not at all. Some of my best friends (and family) are Christians. They are not scum at all. Fine people. However, none of them have Farron's particular views on gay people etc.

I did read his full speech but it's too long to quote it all in a post. I just fail to see how the dilema he describes as impossible for him as party leader is not also impossible for him as an MP.

It's allmost become a crime to be a christian in a pre dominantly christian country, Christians are fair game to be attacked over anything and everything, however in parts of the world, they do not ridicule them, they are just making them extinct via mass slaughter whilst the eyes and mouths of the liberal left keep shut. all religun is bollox and is just a control tool to manipulate large sections of society into disorder, divide and conquer

His personal bible beliefs never interfered with his political views on equality and he was very pro gay and lgbt rights so i don't understand why he's been under so much pressure regarding it.

I wonder what Sadiq Khan's private views about Islam and homosexuality are?

As long as these views are overridden with a view that everyone deserves equality, does it matter what he believes people will answer to God about in the next life?

You have to appear authentic as a politician, they all get it for some reason or another - Corbyn on IRA et al, May on everything because she is a robot which has no thoughts or feelings and Farron on teh gayz.

There is a massive amount of hypocrisy in the 'outrage' shown towards his comments, as there usually is with the nonsense that politicians get shot down with. The simple fact is that Farron wasn't getting the Lib Dems anywhere and it is probably the right time to go, seems like a decent chap mind.

So apparently the UK is not a free liberal society because we don't we don't tolerate the archaic practices of some religion.

You're leaving the leadership because you are shite, nothing else.

Edit - I can't find the quote but he mentioned that the UK is not a free liberal society because we dont tolerate peoples religious beliefs.

I'm not sure what you really mean here.

Is it tolerant to tolerate other peoples intolerance?.

Farron can have his beliefs. He has harmed no one. He never said he wanted to change any laws. He is harmless and is being attacked for his set of principles.

But the way he is talking he opens up a can of worms. What is liberalism? The blanket acceptance of absolutely any belief?.

Does the UK have a set of principles that needs to be protected?. Do we frown upon certain religious practises/beliefs?. Apparently not.

Tim Farron has got some though.

    He is contradicting himself.

Well lets hope they get onto May's case as soon as possible.
