McInnes turns down Sunderland

Aberdeen have announced that manager Derek McInnes and assistant Tony Docherty will stay with the club.

Sunderland had been given permission to speak to the management team as they seek a replacement for David Moyes.

The Dons said on their website they were "pleased to confirm" the duo "have elected to remain at Pittodrie until at least the summer of 2019".

And McInnes said: "I feel there is so much still to be done here at Aberdeen."

Moyes resigned as Black Cats boss following their relegation from the Premier League.

The two clubs agreed compensation, allowing the English side to speak to former Scotland midfielder McInnes, who previously managed in England with Bristol City.

Or sensible from McInnes. He's done a good job up there. While Aberdeen aren't likely to challenge for the title, finishing 2nd again and doing well in a cup keeps McInnes profile high.

Sunderland are in a mess. Their best players will leave and there's a major rebuilding job there. Knowing how trigger happy Championship clubs can be if success isn't immediate, it could be damaging for McInnes' managerial career if Sunderland struggled through no real fault of his own.

It must be that Sunderland are in a right state. He's just lost his best player in Hayes to Celtic, and Rangers are spending again.

I think he's waiting for a better job to come up, I fully expect Sunderland to be mid table at best next year.
