Thread: Need a new laptop

    Need a new laptop

Finally decided that my years old laptop needs to feck off to the tip.

Looking for a new one so where better to ask than this place?

All I need is a basic model that won't cost too much and will do what I need - mainly sticking my cd's onto iTunes, printing off stuff from word etc. and the odd spreadsheet thingy for my missus' work stuff. Most of the time I use my iPad so it's not going to get a lot of heavy use, downloading, large documents etc.

    Any recommendations?

P.s one other thing, I've got loads of cd's on my old laptop on iTunes. Will I have to put them all on the new one or can I just log on to iTunes and access them all from a new device?

    Cheers very much good people.

Do you have an iTunes account?

If so there should be some level of cloud storage allowing you access your music from several devices when you sign in. Like your phone for example.

Is your current laptop a Mac? Either way, if you still want to be able to use CDs/DVDs Id recommend you get a used or refurbished machine no more than 5 years old.

    Cheers for the reply.

I've got an iTunes account but I don't buy music on there. No idea what the cloud thing is or where I find it.

All my cd's are put on my laptop onto iTunes and then onto my iPod.

The problem I've got is I updated iTunes and now the stupid thing doesn't load. I've spent most of today uninstalling it, reinstalling it, trying to upgrade to windows 10 and god knows what else.

Long story short, I've given up and decided to finally get a new laptop.

To be honest, it'll probably be quicker and easier to just manually put them all on my new laptop rather than figure out the right way.

Off to bed now before I lose the plot.

You'll have to back your music up, copy it back onto the new pc & import it back into iTunes.

I'll be honest here, you could have written that in Welsh and it would have made as much sense to me.

I don't think it matters now anyway.

Yesterday I couldn't get into iTunes. This morning I can't even get windows to load correctly to even start my computer.

I've got a blue screen on my laptop saying I can choose advanced repair options - might give that a go, how much worse can it get?

    Re: Need a new laptop

I loaded a bunch of CD's onto my old laptop and saved to my itunes library, all lost when I got a new laptop. Itunes only seems to back up stuff you've bought to the icloud, unless you purchase something called itunes match that my son told me about.

That Blue screen of yours doesn't sound good. Might be worth taking it to PC world, as long as there's not too much porn on it.

Ok so I've done some stuff and here's what I've found out.

I've reverted back to the original windows (7?) and most of the usual stuff is working again.

My iTunes (latest version) still doesn't work - I get a message saying "the program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer"

Tried installing an old version of itunes - won't install correctly.

After a bit of digging around, it looks like my windows updates aren't working properly. After more digging it gets a bit shit. Apparently some of my registry files are missing/corrupted and if I go to services.msc, there is no 'windows update service' on there which means I can't get windows updates to work.

Most of this doesn't mean a lot to me but I think it's probably a good time to just accept it's time to bin it and buy a new one.

Which brings me back to my original question.....

Any suggestions for a decent budget laptop that will do the basics?

Cheers for that - never heard of iTunes Match (I'm guessing it costs money) and wouldn't know how to back stuff up to a cloud.

Looks like I'll be having to put them all on again when I get a new one.

I think I'll just stick to the wireless

    Refurb from Apple?

If so they are like new, Apple has a great rep for refurbs.

Without wishing to incur the ridicule of people on here, I'm assuming it's got a thing on the side for putting my cd's in to put them on iTunes (disk drive maybe?)

Also, can I just buy it and use it? - in other words I won't be expected to stump up extra money to get stuff like windows, Microsoft office (for spreadsheets and stuff) put on it.

I usually ask Mrs R to explain this sort of stuff but last time I could feel her exasperation seeping through my screen so I'm scared of pushing her over the edge.

You can set up a monthly payment for iTunes match, I think mine is $1.99 a month. You never have to bother with CDs again. Once I imported mine. I just threw them all away. I can access all of my 16,000+ songs from any device.

If you can get your old computer to work long enough to upload your songs, you won't have to do anything on your new computer except sign in to iTunes. Or any subsequent computer or device you own. How much is your time worth? It's got to be worth $24 a YEAR to never have to **** around with CDs again. Plus, your songs are matched with clean files, so no skips or clicks either.
