    Rooney

I think it's a great move for him back to Everton. I think he's had a bad time of it when you consider the records he's broken, club and country, the trophy haul, and the guy has not moaned or thrown his toys out the pram, apart from that one time with Fergie but he ended up staying anyway. Also that programme with linekar about him, I thought he came across as down to earth and just loves playing football. He's made mistakes but he's definitely learned from them. Top professional. People will blast him over the wages he gets but thats football, can't blame the player really..we all want the best for ourselves and our families.

I think he'll be a success next season
And I hope Everton finish above united!

Right then, Rooney love-in over !!

    Re: Rooney

Whilst I agree with some of that how you can call him a top professional I don't know.
He hasn't looked after himself at all and is in rapid decline. A top athlete smoking and drinking in this day and age is criminal especially given he's one of the highest paid players on the world.

Look at Ronaldo he looks so fit that he could play another 10 years if he chooses.

Rooney looks like he be lucky to have 2 more years in the Prem.

    I think you're spot on.

Just checked, and that smoking incident was 5 years ago! When he was at the peak of his powers! Maybe he shouldn't have quit.

Anyway, Zidane and Johan cruyff both smoked!

I think it went stale for him at united, hence the decline. A new challenge now and Rooney could have more than 2 years in him as he doesn't rely on pace. Time will tell..

Iike obviously, I reckon footballers have a around about a 12 year shelf life before time takes it toll. Michael Owen burst on the scene in his teens, as did Rooney but come 28/29 they both began to fade a little. In the past, players like Norman Whiteside, Paul Allen etc faded as time caught up with them due to the early emergence. Players who come to the fore around 21/22 perhaps go on until their early 30s, it's maybe that most people's bodies can only take so much, early start/early finish.

Hes gone stale last few years due to niggling injuries and loss of form and I have no doubt his lifestyle is a contributing factor.

He clearly likes a beer and it was only last year, whilst on England duty, that he gate crashed a wedding party whilst pissed. The year before that he gets knocked out in his kitchen whilst having a few beers with Phil Bardsley, and recently lost £500k drinking and gambling in a casino.

Im sorry but that’s not the behaviour of a top professional or a world class athlete. Hes never looked athletical but you can get away with it more when youre younger. He clearly hasn’t made the necessary lifestyle changes required of a world class sportsman as they get older.

Ronaldo hit the scene early same as Rooney and has clearly looked after himself a lot better. Besides the already mentioned Giggs and Maldini there are the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, all top players who broke through young and played well into their 30’s and didn’t start the descent as early as Rooney has.

Its difficult to compare players from different era's. 86 mentions about Cruyff, who was a chain smoker, but theres no way he would meet the physical demands of today. Whiteside was a big drinker but at a time when drinking culture was the norm in the game.

I think todays players, and players playing in the same era as Rooney, who live a clean lifestyle and make the sacrifices can have a prolonged career at the top. Ive mentioned 4 off the top of my head in my previous post and im sure there will be many more, especially if we include overseas players. Thierry Henry and Xavi another two that spring to mind as im typing.

Interesting comments about Rooney and the wedding party , turned out the truth was much less dramatic than your version of events .
You really are a wrong un .

Agree with this. He's been going down hill for a good few years now. Ronaldo, giggs, Ibrahimovic, ECT, all adapted thier diets, and training as they got older, same with sportsmen like Federer. Where as Rooney hasn't

There's always pre season photos of Rooney carrying a spare tire and that's really not good enough for someone earning 300k a week.

I think Rooney simply matured naturally earlier ,yes he made some headlines ,but my understanding he was a superb trainer for club and country , certainly smashed a lot of records and we should perhaps admire those qualities .

I remeber one game that typfied his ability, strength, commitment to the cause it was against Spurs , played in midfield , scored twice , kicked two balls off the line , and received MOM ,was head and shoulders above anyone on the day, never stopped running .

    Indeed.
Iv'e never been one to imagine that players - esp. at our level - ought to somehow be flawless, automaton supermen simply becuase they are paid well. The whole game is overpaid IMO, but it is what it is.

But when a player is honoured with megastar money - crazy money - far more than we can imagine, and way more than many other great players - then surely they owe it to all , including themselves to show that they are (somehow..) worth all that, and why they are worth it. And do their best to do do at all times.
Their careers are short, and paid well. It should be no sacrifice to stay in shape for a couple of decades and then retire very, very well off, and still relatively young.
