I know a few people that moved to wales at the end of junior school and during secondary school that now think they are pedigree welsh. Accent and all.

    No I'm all for it.

If Konta had children here then they'd be classed as British from birth. It is all silly.

She is one of our own .

Just because she played for Australia till 2012 , was born in Australia to Hungarian parents.

    Splitting hairs I say.

I.e. there's s Slovenian Brit who is far harder to accept, and not because he's nowhere near as good.

Regardless of that point, which UK women's place is she stealing? I realise it matters little for the nationality question but there really is a lack of depth in UK tennis talent.
she could have welsh in her too if she wanted

She moved over here at 12, if she was a footballer she would have been eligible to play for England, under the 4 year compulsory schooling laws.

The general consensus on here is that the many Welsh legacy players who play for Wales are fine, as long as they feel Welsh, or its parts of the rules, whats the difference.

Konta may have moved here aged 12 but was more than happy to continue to represent Australia in the Davis Cup. Co-incidentally decided to become a British national in the same year she was given LTA money. As soon as that money was cut in 2015... moved her training base to Spain.

The move here was aimed at her career, the nationality change was aimed at getting more funding for her career. Nothing more, nothing less - a cynical usage of national status.

Welsh legacy players is different to this case for the most part. There's no English, British blood in Konta's family. The only comparable situation you could use would be if Whitts played for Wales due to having been resident here for so long - which simply would not happen at all in football, at least not in British football.

Wasn't there some excitable talk about Angel Rangel becoming eligible for Wales?

You are trying to tell me here that none of the Welsh legacy players do not look at international football as a way of furthering your career, and do it for the love of their granddad, bear in mind that Ashley Williams had to be informed by the FaW that his qualification existed.

Jacks seemed to be gleefully. Of course, little things like facts get in the way and they don't like those.

Other nations use nationality changes - Germany in particular.

British nations however have the gentleman's agreement not to nationality changes due to residency. If say Coleman decided to be cheeky and do that, then English FA could quickly and easily do the same, meaning all Welsh talent flocking to English academies would then be fair game.

I'm saying in the case of Williams, he at least had a link to Wales in his family.

Konta has the square root of f*ck all family history with Britain.

That was the difference I identified in my post. Do I agree with the legacy approach? Not really. It's as opportunistic as Konta but again, the only difference is at least they have some link to Wales.

I think that only counts for players born within the UK. Players from outside the UK can become eligible due to residency - I believe that was how Zaha could play for England (but might be wrong).

The Konta system of qualification, would now make her eligible for football in Wales, under the 4 year compulsory schooling laws. Personally i believe actually spending 4 schooling years in a country is a better link than, having one grandparent, who you have to be told existed.

Robert Earnshaw moved to Wales at 9, i would never suggest that he wasn't Welsh.

Again, the situations are close but not enough to be fully comparable.

Konta was happy to live in Britain and retain Australian citizenship. It was only when the offer of funding came in she magically decided she felt British. If the LTA hadn't offered money then she would be an Australian still. Even with the 4 years schooling rule, as an adult she had zero interest in becoming British before the funding offer.

It's akin to nation doping. The clamour back in the eighties to get Zola Budd a passport to circumvent the ban on South Africa I felt was an utter disgrace, view Konta the same way.

Yes, but nothing is completely comparable.

At the end of the day given her life situation she would be eligible to play for her country in the majority of sports played around the world. Did she more than likely play the funding systems, yes. Are all players that are playing international football, doing it for the love of that country, no.

Its is an amusing situation where fans can justify players playing for their country in football, using terms as, the country must use all the laws it can to improve the team, and if they feel Welsh then that is good enough. However if that sport is then Cricket or Tennis, then how can people support this impostor.
