Great win just now in the 1/4 final
Faces Venus in the semi final.
She'll have to put in a stellar performance to get to the final.
She's had a mercurial rise to the top.
How can anyone get any patriotic pride in an Australian stealing a British girls place?
She moved over here at 12, if she was a footballer she would have been eligible to play for England, under the 4 year compulsory schooling laws.
The general consensus on here is that the many Welsh legacy players who play for Wales are fine, as long as they feel Welsh, or its parts of the rules, whats the difference.
Konta may have moved here aged 12 but was more than happy to continue to represent Australia in the Davis Cup. Co-incidentally decided to become a British national in the same year she was given LTA money. As soon as that money was cut in 2015... moved her training base to Spain.
The move here was aimed at her career, the nationality change was aimed at getting more funding for her career. Nothing more, nothing less - a cynical usage of national status.
Welsh legacy players is different to this case for the most part. There's no English, British blood in Konta's family. The only comparable situation you could use would be if Whitts played for Wales due to having been resident here for so long - which simply would not happen at all in football, at least not in British football.
my half bad she's lived in the uk since she was 14 but took citizenship in 2012 as you said. also hungarian parents, lived in the uk for 12 years qualifies her in my book, rugby and athletics have much shorter qualifying periods, also she's not holding back any uk born female talent
Moved from Australia initially to Barcelona, trained there before moving to Britain.
Colour me surprised but the same year she became British she received funding from LTA.
The decision to become British was purely for financial reasons - it was every bit as farcical as Zola Budd getting a passport of convenience.
She represented Austrailia up until 2012 can you imagine Gareth Bale switching to england at the next world cup its not right, but the strawberries and cream crew are so so desperate.
