Thread: Got nothing to hide by posting on Facebook or elsewhere?

Got nothing to hide by posting on Facebook or elsewhere?

Just in case you wondered where we were heading with all this data:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...a-crime-police

It may not bother many of you, but it scares the shite out of me about how this could be used and abused. As the report says, the moment the algorithms identify you then you are ****ed basically.

Be careful where you live, who you hang around with and what you say online. It's all being used to profile you, your acquaintances and your neighbourhood.

This plays out in only one way - once you're labelled as a particular thing then you're going to find it really difficult to shed that label.

Now with my full tin-foil hat on, a more detailed discussion of what this software can do:

    https://theintercept.com/2017/02/22/...e-whole-world/

If too long to read, the following may help condense it down a bit

"Notably, the partnership has included building software specifically to facilitate, augment, and accelerate the use of XKEYSCORE, one of the most expansive and potentially intrusive tools in the NSA’s arsenal.

According to Snowden documents published by The Guardian in 2013, XKEYSCORE is by the NSA’s own admission its “widest reaching” program, capturing “nearly everything a typical user does on the internet.”

A subsequent report by The Intercept showed that XKEYSCORE’s “collected communications not only include emails, chats, and web-browsing traffic, but also pictures, documents, voice calls, webcam photos, web searches, advertising analytics traffic, social media traffic, botnet traffic, logged keystrokes, computer network exploitation targeting, intercepted username and password pairs, file uploads to online services, Skype sessions, and more.” For the NSA and its global partners, XKEYSCORE makes all of this as searchable as a hotel reservation site.
But how do you make so much data comprehensible for human spies? As the additional documents published with this article demonstrate, Palantir sold its services to make one of the most powerful surveillance systems ever devised even more powerful, bringing clarity and slick visuals to an ocean of surveillance data."

We're sleepwalking into this, in fact, most people welcome it with the naive cry "I've got nothing to hide!"

I can assure you all that the Russians ... Chinese ... Britain and probably the Koreans (North and South ....one republic after all) are all over this too.
Only the EU will be floundering .....years behind. Brexit a problem here for the EU.

Not all of us are sleepwalking but we are still being dragged along with the crowd, it's probably too late for me to be careful what I say online now anyway

Do we wonder why in the land where apathy is king?!
Remember the long drawn out 'discussions - on here, and every bloody where' - where many folks were adamant that this kind of thing was all in the imagination of 'dopey tin-foilers', and that they themselves had nothing to hide. Arf Arf.

Nothing to hide still means plenty to harvest,

There is so much data, much of it will never be 'looked at' by Humans. But it will be processed no doubt.
Machines running code will very possibly make important decisions about us. Coldly and heartlessly.

    All a bit late now?!

Unfortunately very true. The reality is that whoever controls this data, controls us. The upshot of all this is that we'll all be forced to use facebook / citizensbook / patriotbook - whatever it'll be called - to make sure this control can then be maintained.

Once you have a profile decided for you then it doesn't matter what you claim to be, the data will confirm what you are. 'Identity theft' will take on a whole new meaning in this brave new world...

If they already have access to everything, then anything stored on computers is accessible it seems. Any data you care about keeping safe should therefore never be connected to the internet.

Yep , changed my "I have nothing to hide attitude , to I have everything to hide "

Wasn't a great film but very though provoking , I only just watched it on Netflix but have been telling everyone to watch it .

Why? got to be too late for that hasn't it? I'm guessing that everything from private groups is noted too I'm probably marked as an extremist already.

    Simple solution:

Once a week every person in uk should go onto facebook and type in "monkey porn, illuminati, **** the system, assassination, conspiracy theory, suicide bomber, public disorder, bildeberg, Theresa May home address, flights to Syria, 9/11, Mrs R"

Either the system will explode or it will flag everyone as terrorists and won't know who to watch.

For the record, I don't have Facebook so I'll type it on here instead.

Based on my last visit to my Facebook page, some girl I worked with a few years back has gone on holiday. Someone else has baked a cake. In other news, someone who I was at uni with, thirty years ago and haven't seen since, has a daughter who just got engaged.

Plenty there for the Feds to get their teeth into

The elimination of cash is top of the agenda. Once money only exists electronically then financial privacy disappears too. That's when politicians and their banking overlords gain complete control over our lives.

Yes, but i'm just preparing to ramp down social media stuff and get back to normality, and to use the time constructively, too old for it will try and get back into going to football
