Thread: Good website.

    Good website.

I'm grateful to one of the contributors to the Feedback section of Mauve and Yellow Army for pointing me in the direction of this excellent football statistics site which isn't just Premier League based like so many others are these days.

Some very surprising figures for the Championship so far. For example, bottom of the table Brentford have had both the highest number of shots (we're third best) and the highest number of shots on goal (we're second, one behind them), while only Burton have had less shots at goal than second in the league Ipswich and there are only three teams with less on target efforts than them - seems like there's at least two sides in the Championship in false positions currently.

Of course, the most important chart by far is the number of fouls one that vindicates those Wolves fans completely, because we've committed two more fouls than them so far this season - mind you, both teams have a look of mid table mediocrity to them in a table which has very surprising leaders and I suppose we should start the campaign about how dirty QPR are going to be now!

However, when it comes to card issues, Wolves have had one more yellow than us, so, obviously, no attention should be paid to that table at all!

What is also interesting is that we're top when it comes to the percentage of shots on target (43% of all shots), but middle of the table in converting those shots on target into goals (28%). You mentioned that Ipswich were possibly in a false position, and they're just above average in their percentage of shots on target (32%), but way out in front in converting those shots on target to goals (82% - Wolves are next best on 58%). It would be interesting to look at defensive stats as well - shots against/shots against on target/goals against.

The league average of converting shots on target to goals is usually close to 30% by the end of the season.
I would expect Ipswich to drop down towards that level.

Conversely you would expect 70% of shots on target to be saved, I think we must have saved higher than expected amount so far.

I listened to a podcast featuring Rasmus Ankersen the other day and i was surpirised to learn that as well as employing a specialist sleep coach they also employ a specialist throw in coach cos he said the conversion of long throw in's to goals is greater than the number of goals scored from corners statistically.

I saw an interesting article on throw ins, not only are you more likely to register a shot in the play immediately after a long throw Vs a short throw (when in the final third of the pitch) but you are also less likely to concede a shot with a long throw.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more clubs employing these tactics.

Similarly short goal kicks are statistically better than hoofing it up field.

They also have a giant striker though, which probably helps
