When do these often referred-to World Cup play-offs come into play....?

I guess I'm being thick about understanding this but here's WOL's explanation of what Wales need to do from their last two games:-

    http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/f...alify-13578062

It says in there that "Could they (Wales), as the statisticians suggest, still miss out on the play-offs even if they finish runners-up in Group D? One of the second-placed sides in the nine European groups will agonisingly not go into those play-offs".

So, if we get second place in the group...and then also qualify for a play-off as one of the 8 from the European Qualifiers......do we then get to play off against the other 7 European qualifiers or against runners-up from other worldwide groups?

If it's the European 8, how many of those runners-up will be in the draw for the finals in Russia - 4, 2 or just 1?

No worldwide teams, just the 8 runners-up from the European section go into the play offs and four winners go to Russia.

Problem being is that with 2 games left Wales have the lowest number of points. There is another team on 14 and one on 15 so it's likely between those 3 who misses out.

It will probably mean that we need to beat the republic to get into the play-offs - a draw with them to finish 2nd won't be any good.

    Assuming we beat Georgia...

8 of the 9 runners up go into play offs, with 4 winners into the finals. It is not the runner up with least points that misses out, but the runner up with least points after deducting points gained against the bottom team in their respective group. Not good for us if Moldova remain bottom. Best case scenario for us would be for Moldova to beat Ireland and go above Georgia. Still one or two groups looking similar to ours. We still need to win the last two games, if we have a chance of play offs. There again, should Serbia capitulate and only gain a maximum of 1 point from last two games, we could finish top. But again we need to win our 2 games.

We need to win 2 games and another team needs to not win 2 games.

It seems there's quite a possibility that we could be eliminated from the World Cup without losing a match.

Bosnia and montenegro don't play a bottom team now.

Sweden play Luxembourg but they're joint last on goal difference. Above belarus by 2 goals

The good thing is bosnia play belgium next. And montenegro play poland. Sweden have the netherlands last as well - who are fighting for a playoff spot.

    1. Portugal (Group B) 15 points

    2. Northern Ireland (Group C) 13 points

    3. Italy (Group G) 13 points

    4. Iceland (Group I) 13 points

    5. Slovakia (Group F) 12 points

    6. Sweden (Group A) 10 points

    7. Montenegro (Group E) 10 points

    8. Bosnia (Group H) 8 points (GD +2)

    9. Wales (Group D) 8 points (GD +1)

These were the rankings in previous years -

    2014:
    Greece 19
    France 17
    Portugal 15
    Ukraine 15
    Sweden 14
    Iceland 14
    Romania 13
    Croatia 11
    Denmark 10

    2010:
    Russia 16
    Greece 16
    Ukraine 15
    France 15
    Slovenia 14
    Bosnia 13
    Portugal 13
    Ireland 12
    Norway 10

2 wins to take us to 14 will be enough.

We just have to keep on winning and praying Two wins should be enough, but if it's not at least we tried

I thought I found a loophole for us. Slovakia play scotland then malta.

So a win for scotland and a game v the bottom group + our two wins and we'd be in.

Turns out then scotland could overtake us as they're on 10 point currently but aren't second!!!!!!.

No point reading into it, just win the games as you say.

Looking at the other groups games and I'm confident we'd be in the playoffs if we beat Georgia and Ireland
