Thread: Pets

    Pets

I am thinking of getting a rescue dog but there seems to be more jumping through the hoops than your average cruffts show ft sake

Anybody got experience of Guinea pigs , rabbits etc ?

I may even get a budgie if there is a budgie rescue centre locally

I have a poor opinion on rabbits.

I had one and all it did was run away & kick you. And make love to the other rabbit, both male. Destroying all wiring as well to games consoles, tvs etc.

We bought two rabbits in a Uni house with 9 people, so it might not be the best starting point

Sludge, dog all day long, my partner is 5 years into alzheimer's and we got ours two years ago, he is a constant delight, he's a miniature poodle, he's tough as old boots but very loving and intelligent,
on a bad day he makes me smile and the added bonus's are we get out to walk him every day (probably wouldn't bother otherwise) and he doesn't moult, poodle crosses are very popular for that reason so i guess you could find a rescue dog, there is also a dedicated poodle rescue website

Hi Sludge, a dog is a great companion and can become a big part of your family from day 1 of rehoming. Always check what the dogs temperament is like and try to ensure they have been exposed to lots of different things as a scared un socialised dog can be a big challenge. Where most dogs are fine there are some who have a reactive nature...so this means you couldn't leave them in kennels or with a per sitter when you go away, even for one day. You also may have to became ful around loved ones due to the dog feeling threatened etc. They can be difficult to predict even with yourself and family at home and certain breeds alongside how they have been socialised and positive experiences contribute to this in the main. If your keeping them outside half the year, ensure they have had plenty of getting used to sleeping outdoors before you start putting them out. Ensure they won't snap at you or bite if you go near their toys and food etc (those sort of things you want to know pre rehoming where possible). We have had real placid dogs in the past but also some that have been a challenge but we've loved them all the same and worked hard to ensure they are trained well - I don't mean dancing or tricks - I just mean trained well to live alongside humans. All the above said - dogs are a such a wonderful pet to have and it's made our lives very happy! We couldn't live without them, that's for sure!

    Have you had them done?.

I've had three dogs in my life and they've all been done, all calmed massively after it. From being lunatics before.

I'm asking because I spoke to someone recently who had a new dog. He didn't have a clue it was even a thing. The idea of it baffled him

+ Dogs are superior to all others as the above two posts say

A neighbour's kitten has moved in with me. They don't mind and still pay the vet's bills.
    You heard it here first.

They don't all bite blokes, they just get close to one person.

Plus, it might nibble his nuts. Which is something that appears to have been sadly lacking for the rotter

Forget dogs, cats and rat type things. What you need is a Jursset, you can keep them in a dark secure place and occasionally let them out to rant or tell you really far fetched amusing stories. You only need to feed them carrots and if they get on your nerves you can just poke them with a sharp stick until you ready to put them back in their dark hole.

Forgot to mention that they are not a pet you would wish to be seen in public with.

    Re: Pets

Hi Sludge, First off, very sorry to read about your dad

Secondly, dogs as a pet, win every time for me!

They are good company, and they get you out of the house twice a day at least, for walkies. When they are a pup, they look cute and can be a bit of a babe magnet, whilst out walking over your local park. So you'll be quids in there.

Make sure you know what breed you prefer best. Or which pair of combined breeds. This needs careful research, but there is plenty of information out there on the internet for you to look out for.

I'm sure I've heard you mention you live in Bridgend? If so one of the best beaches in South Wales, Ogmore, is accessible to dog walkers all year round. It's just down the road from you too! Bonus!

I got my first dog from the dog's home in Cardiff, a German Shepherd, and have been in love with the breed, ever since. They are loyal, extremely intelligent, and very protective of their territory. So no bugger will ever break into your house whilst he or she is there. Unlike a wife or girlfriend, they are always extremely happy to see you, and make a huge fuss when you come back home after being out. Downside is, she (my current GS) molts a fair bit, and hates the postie, coz he fails to acknowledge her, or make a fuss of her when HE is on HER territory. Oh, and they can be a tie if you wish to go away shagging for the weekend. Unless of course said female hasn't got a cat, another dog, and hopefully likes dogs and dog walking

    Hope this info helps
