Agree pretty much with that Sludge, although I didn't mind Clockwork Angels. They were still superb live mind.

Also just realised that Charlie Watts was ranked 12th greatest rock drummer of all time in Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time

    Reni from the Stone Roses.
    Blondie's drummer Clem Burke.
    Keith Moon of course.
    Dave Grohl

In rock music, it has to be Ginger Baker for me, though nobody's mentioned Carl Palmer,

But if we go into jazz, there's Buddy Rich..

    Re: World's best drummer

I was just about to put forward Carl Palmer of ELP. I used to like Terry Williams of Man back in the 70s, but would probably plump for Ginger Baker.

It's always the same names who pop up and they are some great drummers, but my favourites are Boris Williams, Topper Headon and Stephen Morris. Three superb drummers who hardly get a mention in these sort of threads.

Probably not the best by ability but the drumming by the Deftones is my favourite by a mile

Ian Paice still is brilliant. Still going strong with Deep Purple at age 69. Even a heart problem last year hasn't slowed him down.

    Re: World's best drummer

My Grandad was the best drummer who ever lived, despite only having biscuit tins for a drum kit and two rolling pins for sticks. Although he had a poor sense of timing and rhythm, he compensated with a heavy handed playing style and practised enthusiastically for 18 hours a day. My Nan didn't appreciate his skills, however, and after 50 years of pounding, she stabbed him in the throat in 1985.

I don't believe he drummed for fifty years......

I wanna add (prolly controversially) that drum solos are the worst part of gigs, imo. Just time to get the drinks in again....

Reminds me of the old joke :

What do Ginger Baker and coffee have in common?
    They're both shit without Cream.

    A correction, cocker:
I'd see Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce every weekend when they were in the Graham Bond ORGANization. That was seriously good band. And Baker was brill - but don't let that get in the way of that ole chestnut.

Of modern bands Dom Howard for Muse is pretty good

I realise the joke is rubbish. If it was any good, I'd be passing it off as my own as I usually do.

It's the usual gag about drummers being untalented and a bit thick.

I know nothing about the technical side of drumming but Terry Williams (ex-Man and ex-Dire Straits) was always impressive.

The drumming should fit the song, but quite often it doesn't.

See? There's also a bit of swing in there, very punk!

I used to know Terry quite well, often going back to his house for late night jam sessions with touring musicians from his blues club, as well as a number of local musicians.

For those that don't know, Terry used to be in Dire Straits and was the drummer on money for nothing. He was a well respected touring and session drummer.

We were talking about influences and who he thought were great drummers.

He stated Levon Helm (from The Band) and Mitch Mitchell (from The Jimi Hendrix Experience).

Great shout from bobh, for Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich.
