Im the same - give direct, I got stung once into helping a charity where less than 50% was actually spent on the charity - the rest went on office, admin,wage AND a tax debt.

Always prefer to give to small local charities - as they always tend to miss out on the main money of the public

When addressing wealthy donors, Catherine Booth, the wife of the salvation army founder William Booth, promoted the Army as “the only organisation whose members to any appreciable extent buttonhole the dangerous classes on their own ground and turn them away from anarchy, infidelity and socialism".

I used to give to them all the time, buy the warcry, everything. They did a tremendous job in Aberfan supporting men working 20 hours a day.
Then I read a report that their accounrs general had embessled £4 million and they took several years to notice. He was convicted but of course they never got all the monay back.
I thoiught then that if they could be missing that amount and not notice they didn't need my 2 penneth.
Now I only give to the RNLI

Our project was based on Tudor road , below Cardiff single women's housing group , then we moved to city road , opposite the roath pub , we helped kids leaving care find housing and supported them to help them keep it , assisted with benefits etc

Too many charities these days are paying big bucks to people ‘managing’ it.

I always give money to the big issue sellers , strictly speaking they are not supposed to accept it but I can't be arsed with the big issue it's a boring read

I don't give to cancer charities , heart charities etc for the same reason , they get well funded

And how many of them are genuine?

Beware of the scammers in shopping centres ... some make tidy sums by buying buckets and sticking pictures of badly treated dogs / animals etc on them.

Worse still are those who try to get you to sign up for a charity. Unsuspecting people may give their account details in good faith.

My old mum, God rest her soul, donated regularly to the RSPCA, initially via a Daily Mirror advert. Did a few checks on the junk mail she received from elsewhere and could not find any credible references. The amount of junk mail she received from other 'charities' who bought her details was alarming.

Some time last year I was stopped in Cheltenham high street by a bloke who wanted me to sign up for a particular charity ... £2 a month type of thing. I questioned him what % of my donation would get through to those that really needed it and he could not give an answer.

There are so many bona-fide charity shops around these days (Barnado's, Air Ambulance, Salvation Army) that would probably be the best place to go and be virtually certain that your donation is not going into a black hole.

Dont have the time at the moment, and I've got to get myself in order at the moment or I'll be no help to nobody.
