Thread: Elbow are just the new Doves

Elbow are just the new Doves

They sound the same to my untrained ear. They use more strings I suppose. Got brothers in the line up. Doves will be kicking themselves for being born too soon. They could be having bucks roll in off John Lewis now.

Haven't elbow been around for longer than the doves?

I believe they started out around about the same time in the early 1990's

I dunno. Its not a diss on Elbow I just think they are uncannily similar to Doves, Maybe just goes to show timing is everything. Elbow have naybe developed their sound. They used to play Womad festivals so maybe they have just put the graft in and found their niche.

Here's Doves before they were Doves.

Hear what you're saying - indie-cheese melodic ballads and no rhythm section. Guy Garvey used to play a hell of a lot of Doves on his half decent radio show. Used to quite like that Doves album but it sounds tired to me now. Never could take Elbow though. Fromage.

Saw both bands on the same bill at the 2002 V festival, Doves were higher up the bill and both, I think promoting their respective first albums.
Both were good and I go back to the first Doves album a lot, cant remember the last time I heard the first Elbow album and apart from The Seldom Seen Kid I haven't been able to get through any other Elbow albums.
Shame Doves split as I thought they had a lot to them.

They always closed with this, another track from their Sub Sub days.

Doves were a great band. Each record was worse than the last though. Like Oasis.

One of my favourite (if not the best) festival experiences I've had was during a Doves set. The sun was setting, everything absorbed during the day was kicking in and there were groups of people doing a massive hippy-jig in front of me during 'Pounding'. Couldn't have been a more perfect moment.

Elbow... I have no opinion of.

New Order will never be surpassed.

The reason I posted it was because I heard kingdom of Rust on the radio earlier n got me thinking. It's kinda football related cause Gary Neweborns son is in the video to that song. Clive Newbiorn. That might be the other way round. I'm not checking. Always like that song. A loved ones ashes being sprinkled on Blackppol beach in the video. We can all kinda relate.

As much as love will tear us apart was a hell of a song especially given what happened after Blue Monday was something else again.

Doves were the best ecstasy in the early 90s. What a buzz.

Just like the quality the names went downhill n all. From a White Dove to a mitzubushi. From flying to just driving. With rhubarb n custards, blue cally's, snowballs in between.

    Is this a Wikipedia answer?

Doves are a bit older but they're late 90s. I remember hearing Newborn by Elbow around 2001, off their first album but a friend had it from before that, and I was blown away. Still probably their best song.
