Thread: Sports personality of the year tonight ( yawn ).

Sports personality of the year tonight ( yawn ).

I remember when this used to be an evening to look forward but since
the BBC has virtually given up on sport it has lost the sparkle it once had.

The BBC aren't able to show many video clips now and so the show ( just like "A question of sport " )
has become more about sports celebs and less about action.

The Beeb seems to have plenty of money to spend on Glastonbury though. Strange
    change in priorities.

The old BBC commentators ( Coleman , Eddie Waring , Brian Johnstone et al must be turning
    in their graves ).

Your observations are true I'm sure, but isn't much of what you say down to licensing restrictions?

To be fair I think Sky and BT Sport are throwing so much money at sport coverage the BBC can't compete any more.

They don't want the BBC to have more than crumbs now.

The Establishment will only take an interest when Wimbledon and the Olympics aren't free any more.

I agree with you so much about the Sports Personality of the Year show - time was I would never miss it, but now I do anything to avoid it. I think the turning point for me came when the decision to tell you who you could vote for by producing a shortlist, as opposed to the open to everyone policy they used to have, was introduced - I hope Mo Farah (who has been nominated six times and, criminally, never finished higher than third) wins tonight, but Lewis bloody Hamilton probably will again.

Used to always watch it as a kid. Parents would our it on and we would watch it every year.

Not seen it for 15 years or more and don't even know who's won it in that time.

BT and sky have much better coverage of anything they do, and in all honesty I wouldn't care if they had all sport....

Which is fine if you can afford to pay them.

RIP free to air sport within 5 years I reckon.

The way it's going we won't have anything on BBC and itv soon.

Would be a real shame but the coverage really isn't great on any of them.

Agreed, can't remember the last time I watched it. Possibly after England won the rugby World Cup, and all the Beeb could do wash show photos and run their radio commentary.

If Lewis Hamilton wins, it will confirm my feelings that the event is no longer significant.

Sky and BT's coverage is much better than ITV, although I think the Beeb do better than all. However, Match of the Day was cringeworthy last night with the running "paint brush" joke that had Ian Wright giggling like a member of OOCC at every mention of the joke.

I have stopped paying for Sky and, whilst initially tempted by BT, I won't be going there either. Free to air sport will only be on the radio soon, and what are the odds that some of that becomes subscription based as radio moves to internet broadcasting?

    Mo Farrah just won.

Joshua was odds on and didn’t make the top three. Nor Hamilton who won the F1 title.

They all seemed a little shocked

Ta for that, twas most enjoyable. We sometimes take it too much for granted how wonderfully multicultural Blighty has become.

Congrats to Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah. Celebrations have begun in earnest throughout the UK. Here are joyful revellers in Bradford who've just returned from Syria.
