As the man said “if I saw you choking to death in a restaurant, would you rather I perform the Heinlich Maneuver on you, or pray for you?”
That says it all for me lol!

Religious wars .......barbaric laws ...........bloodshed worldwide over what's left of his myth ?

We have thirty bishops in the unelected house of lords scrutinising our parliament !!

What the feck are they doing there ?

We may as well put thirty people who work in tescos in their place

The myth of religion is thankfully dying for most of us and we put our faith in facts and science , not silly books

Religion belongs in the dark ages , some of the stuff written and believed in the Bible and other holy books is barbaric , the views on sexuality extreme , the role of women just to create life etc , mutilation of the genitals of young Jewish boys and young Muslim girls, that's just Christianity , Judaism and Islam , the other organised religions are just as bad

And what's worrying is each believer seems to think their god or their book is the right one

I hope religion is put under the microscope till the earth explodes and human life is no more
You can be brainwashed in many different ways that are damaging, it's not just religion, for example some people think socialism is a good idea.

But if God done everything for you what would be the point in living? I'm not religious I struggle to believe in both faith and science

In a clever piece of sleight of hand, religion has been replaced by the media, and people believe all of that crap instead

Indeed but wether a capitalist or socialist the effect of such policies can be accurately assessed for example the Tories brought in the 1983 mental health act .....fact......it's law

What facts are there to support the existence of an omnipresent , all powerful god ?

    There are none

I'm not saying there are but people still have faith and that's their choice, people like to have something to believe in imo, if that's what they want to do it's none of my business.

But what when their faith leads to harm to others ? Young Catholic girls in Ireland for years had to go to dodgy black market back street abortionists , risking their lives , because the stupid Catholic faith in Ireland banned abortion

    I think that's everybody's business , don't you ?

Faith leading to laws in a modern country ?

    Fecking worrying

And young Jewish boys all over the world having their genitals hacked at to remove their foreskins ? All because of faith ?

It's the dark ages , if people want to believe a load of crap that leads to the harm of others then thank feck people like Dawkins are there to challenge them

If you do find any evidence let me know and I will be down the church in the morning

There is no evidence of Father Christmas flying around on a sleigh with his fluffy white beard either but we will still tell every child in the world that he exists to make them behave themselves this week

Apparently, I was lucky as some other branches of this fairy story have all of the above and impose a booze ban.
The cleverer amongst you can argue about the theology behind it all but for the reasons above I'm out and will take my chances in believing in my own little private way of living.
If I am incorrect, then come the day of judgement I will have a long discussion with whichever version of the ultimate being turns out to somehow exist. Problem is as these believers cannot even agree what version is correct how on earth can we non believers take them seriously.
On a lighter note I need a cuppa and a sausage sandwich ( another mark in my ability to avoid hell) and the far more important debating point is HP or tomato sauce. Now that is a debate worth having.

Christians get away lightly compared to Wolves fans imo.

I'm guessing none of you are doing anything special on Monday btw
People are leaving them alone. However, most of these debates spawn from religious people passing comments as fact and denouncing scientific discoveries as untrue. They also spawn from kids receiving blinkered education that deliberately offers one view and neglects to mention things such as evolution, age of the universe, existence of other worlds. You seem to be thinking that the skeptic community are just out there picking fights. We are not. Often comments from skeptics such as Dawkins are borne from someone dismissing, and attacking, science.

My own view is that religion holds people back, and that is a huge shame. It also indoctrinates children from an early age and that is a form of abuse - but it is acceptable because these children will grow up with greater morals than my kids (for example). I try to promote critical thinking with my kids and, if they emerge from that aupporting Judaism, Christianity or Islam then at least they will have made an informed choice. Too many people have had that taken from them.

That isn't me bashing religious people, by the way. That is me being frank about something that I see as a form of abuse. I grew up with grandparents threatening me with hell and rewarding me with heaven - it's pretty ****ed up when you look at it that way.

If someone claims to me that the earth is 6000 years old - then I tend to open up the discussion. If someone comes to me claiming Noah's Ark is a fact, I ask questions about the ridiculousness of it. These things have happened to me - I am not aware of many skeptics going up to religious people and bashing them. It's almost as if you are viewing anti-religious comments (that are based on scientific facts) as unsavoury - what next, Tory voters no longer allowed to laugh at Labour policies?

I am not anti religious people, I am anti religion. And, without going into details of my past, I have very good reasons for that.

With all due respect, I fail to understand how you struggle to have faith in science.
A scientific experiment can be be carried out before your very eyes and the result will be there for you to witness for yourself.

For me, the question of whether God exists is a lower level discussion. Wheeling out science to disprove religion is too obvious. The aspects I find interesting are why did God come into being in the first place, why was religion allowed to fail, and what has replaced it? To find the answers you need to go back in history.

It is an interesting question. Isn't it interesting that there are so many religions out there - all spawned (in my opinion) from people searching for answers to life. Mortality is a given, we are an intelligent mammal and that comes with ego. We are simply too important to just die. Or, we are too scared to just die. Therefore, there is either life after death (because we are special) or there needs to be life after death (consolation). When a loved one passes on, we can't think simply that they are dead, the end.

Also, religion is a tool for controlling population. Patriotism is another tool, As the Kinks sang
    I was born, lucky me
In the land that I love

    You can reword it
    I worship, lucky me
The real God, like my dad

Putting the fear of God into people is a saying - but analyse it. The fear of God. That's a powerful tool. It's a tool that has been misused too - just ask some of the poor people who were abused by priests, imams or clergymen when they were kids. Doubtless, many of them were told of horrible repercussions in the afterlife should they ever tell.

Without any doubt, the concept of God came from the higher echelons of any civilization that invented a god. It is unlikely that God was created by a serf.
