    City sweet on Mikey Devlin....?

According to Teamtalk, Warnock is ready to take a chance on Hamilton's 24 year-old captain and central defender who is nearing recovery from an ACL.

We need another central defender like we need a hole in the head.

Maybe he could play defensive midfield, replace Gunnarsson?

If he's cheap, why not? We should be making moves like this, low risk gambles with potentially big rewards.

    I agree

If he is an improvement on other players in the team then why not. If he can be sold on later for a profit then why not...

He does like to sign an injured player.

I agree too. Even if they hang around after January and into next season (unlikely), both Halford and Connolly are squad players at best. We've only got three specialist centre-backs. One is injured, one will be 33 next month and one has been known to return from Gabon with an injury. If Paterson is anything to go by, Scottish football may offer some value,

I’m not sure what making a profit has got to do with anything anymore.

Why do fans get animated at the economics of player transfers? - the world changed about 20 years ago. It’s the decision of the ownership to spend money on players - I suppose if fans care that their owner gets richer as a consequence of a deal then that’s fair enough, but let’s not kid ourselves that transfers in and out generate a kitty that WILL be used for
    other transfers. It’s not a debit/credit system.

Where do you think the profit from transfers, if it exists, goes?

It’s fun to speculate that we may have a player that is worth £20m, but all that really means is that as fans we’ve got a player we like.

Let’s take Zohore for example - if Tan sold him for £15m you don’t really think he’d go and spunk the whole lot on a repalcement striker do you?

That may be true. It may not. But it misses out the impact of Football Fair Play on clubs. I have become very interested in whether our accounts show we are compliant or not - a situation improved by making a profit on player transfers - much more than whether Vincent Tan is pouring money into the club each month or taking a bit out (it is the former by the way).

I don’t disagree with the FFP perspective, but that is a more recent thing. My point was more that once upon a time you could get excited about the transfer market and how your team performed in it, because it felt that cash in was spent out on new players.

Now it just feels like a business, which I know was really always the case, but I don’t have any emotional reaction to transfer fees today whereas before I did

These are the type of transfers that shows the worth of a manager.
Anyone can sign a Paul Pogba or and Alexis Sanchez.
To a lesser level anyone can sign a Vydra or a Nerves, but gambling on a Mendez-Laing or a Damourand coming up trumps shows how good Warnock is.

This was my biggest issue with Slade. All those years in the lower divisions yet the best he could come up with was Alex Revell.

Don’t get me wrong - unearthing a gem is still special, but only if they stick around for a bit. Losing them for a big fee isn’t something that I can get positive about.

I'm with you all the way about Slade - he absolutely did my head in. However, if the reported transfer fees are right and he was involved in the deals in any way, then replacing Brayford (£2m) with Peltier (£300k) has to be his best day's work at the City.
