Thread: Barry Davies

  1. #1

    Barry Davies

Great commentator. Just playing some old footage at HT in the scouse match and he was the commentator.

Barry Davies, Brian Moore, John Motson, Harry Carpenter in the boxing, Des Lynam on Grandstand. Is it me or were the commentators and broadcasters so much better pre Sky TV and political correctness took over?

Are we morphing into our parents / grandparents with the old “in my day things were so much better” or were they really that much better?

I couldn’t bear Brian Moore either. Barry Davies was my favourite.
I think John Murray is the best of the current bunch.

Can't believe you've failed to mention the legend that was Hugh Johns. Shame on you.

    Re: Barry Davies

Loved Reg Gutteridge in the boxing, such a knowledgeable bloke.

    David Coleman. "ONE, nil".

    Re: Barry Davies

Barry Davies was excellent. Motson and Gubba awful.

    Re: Barry Davies

I never rated Motson and Brian Moore. Like many British commentators, I found them very sycophantic, jingoistic and juvenile. I watch German TV a bit and the commentary is far more balanced and grown up.

    It is now.

Hated Brian Moore - my dad also said he was bias towards London clubs

This is a piece I read only yesterday - when searching for Alan Green

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.f...alan-green/amp

He blames Wolstenholme - and he may have a point. I think a lot of commentators are looking for their historic line.

Hugh Johns was good, used to be on Soccer Sunday in his older days.

Barry Davies was great, never worried to have a moment of silence and let the picture do the talking,

Motion was crap. Great stats, but, by all accounts, has a huge ego.

Agree with your Barry Davies comment. He knew that he was there to augment what was on screen and if he couldn't improve it or help the viewer then he kept schtum.

My favourite commentary by him was actually the scream when Bergkamp scored his incredible goal vs Argentina in 98. It was a man who really appreciated beautiful skill and who was taken aback by something out of this world.

Brian Moore biased towards London clubs... it was London Weekend Television. It was his job. Nothing's changed wrt 'big clubs, in fact it's got worse!

    Yes it was.

    Re: Barry Davies

Gubba was useless at both commentary and presenting.

Harry Carpenter was the king of boxing in my opinion

Motson, Davies, Coleman and Moore all bring back good memories to be fair

Alan Green - a complete and utter cock
