Not that surprising. There are 172 more games in a championship season than in la liga

Some big clubs in our league.
    Villa/Leeds/Forest/Sheff Wed/Derby to name a few.
Outside the top 4/5 teams in most mainland European leagues, a lot of the teams are small and quite poorly supported.

In terms of average attendance the championship is below the bundesliga 2 and all of the top leagues shown there

    Re: Surprising attendance figures

The list for average attendance would be
    Bundesliga
    Premier league
    La Liga
    Serie a
    2 bundesliga
    Ligue 1
    Championship
    Eredivisie
    Portugal
    League one

    Re: Surprising attendance figures

Damn sight cheaper to watch games in a few of those leagues than the Championship.

To re-echo some other replies, the number of games and the number of bigger teams in the Championship cause that.

The top 7 supported clubs in the Championship last season had attendances greater than the worst 25% supported clubs in the Premier League. Newcastle, top Championship attendance in 2016/17 would have been in the Premier League top 6 for attendances, Villa would have been 9th, Derby 13th etc. A million more people watched football in the top 10 attendances in the Championship than watched football in the bottom 10 attendances in the Premier League.

Take Newcastle out of the equation (watched by well over a million people over the course of a season) and the Championship drops to 4th in terms of total attendances.
