Wakefield is nowhere near as big as Cardiff. I doubt if it's even half the size.

Just googled Wakefield and it says it has a population of 99,000 (as of 2011)

How can that be bigger than Cardiff?

According to Wiki the 2011 (census data) population of the City of Wakefield was 76,886 and the District of Wakefield was 325,837.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Wakefield

Either measure, it is much smaller than Cardiff.

Actually the article refers to multi-club cities.

Basically the whole point of this thread is the answer needs to Bristol.

In terms of population I'd say Birmingham.

However Bristol must be pushing for top spot.

The Sheffield figure is for the city and a few outlying villages but not complete other towns like for the Wakefield district.

Whenever i go through it Wakefield always feels like a middling West Yorkshire town - not a city to compare with other places at the top end of the list you linked.

Anyway, the answer to the OP must still be 'yes'.

Sorry, thought that we were contemplating current failures.

Apart from some mickey mouse cup for lower league sides, have Bristol City won anything?

Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?

They should just merge and get over it, the place isn’t big enough for 2 clubs anyway.....

Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?

Wakefield is the biggest city without a recognised football team.

Bristol has to be the biggest city without any real history in the top flight over the last few decades.
