Thread: Your Worst Match Postponements ever.......

    Your Worst Match Postponements ever.......

I drove to Brighton away (from Surrey) last year, only to find out when I got to the pub before the game that it had been called off due to fog, but I'm sure that when I lived in Cardiff, a home game against Milwall was called off on our way to NP. So, a lot less than an hour before KO, as I lived in Lakeside. It must have been late 1970s? Maybe even one of the very first matches scheduled for a Sunday?

    Hartlepool mid 90's

    Carlisle mid 90's

and as you say Brighton, last year.

Got all the way, to all 3, to have the game called off.

Remember that Millwall postponement , it was our first Sunday game, called off while we were walking to the ground.

Another one was Preston, went all the way there, great time in the pub before hand, then called off. !!

Well, I say called off, "our players thought it was called off, as they got stuffed 6-0"

Not the worst in terms of journey, but the farce at CCS when it turned out they hadn't bothered to fit the boiler for the undersoil heating takes some beating.

I remember Peterborough back in the day all day travelling, called off an hour before ko! As it happens Cardiff Devils were playing in Peterborough so we decided pub and the Devils was a good option! I also remember an FA Cup tie at Gillingham being postponed but fortunately we weren't that long into our journey so diverted to Villa Park who were playing Darlington. We were right by the players entrance and in ground before players come out to warm up. Villa had Mark Delaney playing for them at the time. As he emerged from the tunnel for the warmup, loads of City fans chanting Delaney 'Do the Ayatollah' his face was a picture and he duly oblidged. At end of the game he duly come over to us clapping. This was the same day other city fans diverted to West Brom who were playing Blackburn where Nathan Blake scored and ran to City fans not Blackburn!!!!

Rochdale away sometime late 80s I think. In their clubhouse and somebody popped head in about 1400 ish to say called off. I think we went to watch Bury v Doncaster.

Drove from London to Port Vale for an evening kick off, we were sitting in the pub opposite the ground when the police came in and said the game was postponed and we had to leave immediately.

Drove from London to Shrewsbury for an evening ko again sitting in a pub near the ground when we got a message to say the game had been called off. There was a good outcome for that, as I negotiated with the landlord. He said if I could get 3 coaches to his pub for the re-arranged game he'd supply us with free sausage and chips. Job done.

I've also got a vague recollection of driving to Halifax and being inside the ground when the game was called off. Again that was an evening ko.

Travelled to Fulham for a midweek evening game only for it to be postponed as we arrived ....we were on the pitch doing our own pitch inspections with the majority deeming it was fine and didn’t know why it was off

Got back on coach , where a vote was being cast where we should go seeing our game was off but sadly metropolitan police escorted us back to M4 with instructions to driver to go home !!

Huddersfield away in the early 90s. Got outside the ground and it was called off so we went to watch Citeh vs Southampton instead and there were more Cardiff fans than Southampton.

As mentioned by others Brighton away last season. Hotel booked for the night and arrived in Brighton about 20 mins before they called it off becuase of fog.

Peterborough because of a frozen pitch. Was on the M6 heading East when it was called off. Diverted to Pride Park to watch Derby v Sheff Weds instead.,

Also in a pub in the Potteries when the Port Vale game was called off.

Was heading to a game at Northampton that was postponed but we hadn't travelled so far so we turned around neat the severn bridge.

Was that the game when Doncaster ran out and looked bemused as there usual away following of 100 had multiplied to over 1000?

I flew over to Minsk to meet Tatyana from match.com but she didn't turn up - even though I had sent her the money for her bus fare.

As mentioned further down the thread it was Bolton we were en route to not Gillingham. However, my old grey matter is recalling a Gillinham away fa cup game getting postponed and we ended up watching Fulham v Sheff Wednesday instead. Someone put me out of my misery and recall this happening!!

Bolton 76/7. Drove all the way up with my then girlfriend, now my wife. The game was called off half an hour before kick off due to a freak rain storm.

Everyone supported Workington and they won 3-0
Their only away win all season, i believe they went out of the league that year.

Re: Your Worst Match Postponements ever.......

2011 or 2012 maybe? Living in Spain, mate of mine (Leicester fan) and me flew back over on the Friday night to watch City vs Leicester. No expense spared, Easyjet flights, hire car and the Premier Inn down the Bay. Walked into first pub Saturday morning to be told that the game had been called off as Tan had not invested in under soil heating...!

I remember that. I travelled back to Cardiff from Manchester to get the coach to Huddersfield to end up in Manchester to watch a match played 15 minutes from my front door.

I had to travel back to Cardiff to pick up my car to drive back to manchester.

The worst for me was Carlisle
