Mrs Richards. That episode is comedy gold.

I remember her in the Rising Damp, a right battle-axe!

Mrs Richards: When I pay for a view, I expect something more interesting than that.
Basil: But that is Torquay, madam.
Mrs Richards: Well it's not good enough.
Basil: Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically...
Mrs Richards: Don't be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea.
Basil: You can see the sea! It's over there between the land and the sky!
Guest: I'd need a telescope to see that.
Basil: Well might I suggest you move to a hotel closer to the sea. Or preferably in it.

I genuinely got sent out of a woodwork class in school for saying ‘what’.

I later found out my teacher had asked ‘are you deaf’?

    He’s dead now.

Yes "Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically..."

"I've decided to stay, but I expect a reduction!"

"Why? Because Krakatoa isn't erupting at the moment?"

One of the best episodes of any sitcom/comedy ever made, but I just wish that she didn't get the last laugh.

I'm sure she was in the series 'Please Sir'. There was a welsh teacher, I'm sure he mentioned he was a Cardiff fan. Perhaps it was rugby. ;)

That was a bit drastic, what did you do to him?

Correct, she was in Please Sir, and the Welsh teacher was played by Richard Davies, who came from Dowlais. He did indeed mention Cardiff City in one episode, and mentioned about Hughie Ferguson scoring the winner in the 1927 cup final.

The Welsh teacher was played by Richard Davies, born in Dowlais, and incidentally was in another episode of Fawlty Towers (the kipper and the corpse).

He often played the stereotype Welshman in comedies.

    *edit* bugger! beaten to it!

I'd forgotten he was in The Kipper and the Corpse.

But Basil just had to be shown to be the loser he was - he was a sympathetic character in that episode, but he really was the worst kind of snob and there is a lot of laughs to be garnered out of debunking pomposity.

    Pauline Collins I think.
Wasn't she also married to John Alderton ( who was also in Please Sir)?

    Or was that Julie Walters?
    I've confused myself now

Pauline Collins was married to John Alderton, Richard Davies wasn't married to any actresses as far as I know.

I did a sitcom writing course a number of years ago and we looked at this episode and came to similar conclusions. It's the very essence of British comedy for the main protagonist to be a failure, and the episode was quite rightly (and expertly) written to follow this trend.

But I still wish that Mrs. Richards could've had more of a comeuppance...
