Two wins needed from three games

Aron Gunnarsson's 75th minute winner for Cardiff City at a passionate CCS last night kept the Bluebird's destiny firmly in their own hands.

Cardiff now need two wins from the remaining three games to ensure auomatic promotion and hold off a Fulham side who are on a 22 match unbeaten run. The west Londoners last lost at Sunderland back before Christmas and ironically they face Sunderland at Craven Cottage next Friday. But with Chris Coleman's side relegated yesterday they might not have much fight in them this time around.

Before then Cardiff play again and have a chance to extend their lead to four points when they face Derby County in the re-arranged game at Pride Park on Tuesday, a game that is live on Sky.

Cardiff kept their advantage with a 2 - 1 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening. Sean Morrison was left unarked to head City into a half time lead but that was not before a couple of early scares that saw Forest fire just over and Neil Etheridge make a smart save to smother Liam Bridcutt's heavy touch.

City almost doubuled the lead at the start of the second half when Ken Zohore burst through on goal but his delicate chip hit the post before being cleared off the line.

Within minutes City were caught out when Forest broke down the left and Bridcutt, racing into the box, made no mistake with his finish and the visitors were level.

That roused the crowd to really get behind the Bluebirds and Zohore again looked to break free but this time he was brought down on the edge of the box. Junior Hoilett floated the free kick beyond the back post where Sol Bamba head down for Gunnarsson to volley City back into the lead.

Sean Morrison was pulled down in the box but the referee waved away the appeal for a penalty when it seem fairly obvious that the Forest defender was manhandling the City skipper.

Bamba almost gifted Forest a second equaliser with a wayward back pass but City got men back and a body on the line block from Gunnarsson kept City in front.

Cardiff saw out four minutes of added time to record another win and to move to 86 points. A total that most seasons would be enough for promotion already but the battle with Fulham is unbelievable and looks like meaning that over 90 points will be needed to claim second place behind Champions Wolves.
