Thread: The World is watching...

  1. #1

    The World is watching...

...a decent report from the Charlotte Observer, a daily newspaper serving North and South Carolina:

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/spo...210275709.html

The Observer's circulation is just short of 200,000. S Wales Echo and Western Mail together have a daily circulation a little over 30,000.

    Re: The World is watching...

It's written by The Associated Press, their equivalent of The Press Association. The same story will be syndicated across US media this week.

You make it sound like I said a bad thing. I was pointing out this isn't just going in a newspaper for 300,000 readers and however many online users. This will be nationwide in the US.

I can never get used to how sentences like "Fulham has gone 23 games unbeaten in the league, stretching back to December when it was 18 points behind Cardiff" sound the way American write about sports teams

I hope the journalist wins a Pulitzer Prize for his outstanding work.

I thought it was a well written piece but we set the bar so low around regional football journalists these days I suppose. We can only await in anticipation what the Hugh Mcilvanney of Berkshire, Russell Kempson, is dreaming up about Warnock from his Tilehurst lair!

It makes sense though. Fulham Football Club is a single entity.

The world is indeed watching. So are Royals. Sources close to Buckingham Palace suggest Her Majesty the Queen, Phil and the corgis will take an early luncheon this Sunday in order to tune into Sky Sports live coverage of the game.

“When Cardiff's players take on Reading on Sunday needing a victory to seal automatic promotion, they'll be wearing the 119-year-old club's traditional color of blue.”

We didn’t start playing in blue until 1908

Depends where you are in the world whether you treat teams and groups as if they’re singular or plural proper nouns. Both ways make sense it just sounds jarring one way when you’re used to the other.

    Re: The World is watching...

I wrote an article for the local newspaper here. They rejected it on the basis that I included 'we'll fecking stuff them.'
