Thread: Buchanan or Whittingham

    Buchanan or Whittingham

Which player was the better free kick taker?

Taking into account the ball was heavier in Buchanan's time.

It was hardly a sodden lace-up in Buchanan's day.

Whittingham before we got to the Premier League was one of the best anywhere. Incredible to think that he only scored 1 direct free kick in his last 180 appearances for us, given his prolificacy.

Easily Whittingham. Buchanan wasn't renowned for his free kick expertise .. . other than that well documented one against Swansea.

I never said it was. How many free kicks did you see with the ball being being able to have a 1 metre+ curl?

He did, we just didn't have blanket coverage of the free kicks

I didn't need the benefit of blanket coverage to draw my conclusion .... I was THERE!

Rivelino was doing it ten years before the period your talking about

So you can remember the hat-trick against Sheff Utd all outside the box? The fans chanting his name for every free kick? (Pre Swansea?)

I said how many did you see? Not that no player could manage it. You just happen to pick a world class player.

"ALL" outside the box? Since when has a penalty been outside the box?

That goal against Swansea wasn't direct from a free kick.

Whitts wins it easily for me.

You're correct. Easy to over look the fact it was tapped sideways to him.

Wasn't it tapped just sightly forwards, not sideways ? (I am old though)

It was Tone - one of the best ever goals at NP - Whitts though by a mile

No contest. What a stupid comparison.

Buchanan struck a dead ball well but with no finesse. He just banged it.

At least you identified Whitts as one of the best we’ve ever had.

Just off the top of my head - Kav, Nathan Blake and Dave Bennett were far better than Buchanan at every other aspect of the game other than blasting the ball - and if I thought for more than 10 seconds I could probably give a handful more (I’m actually surprised you didn’t pick an Irish player 🤣)

Whitt's very clever dead spot kicker, not only free kicks ,but good corner and penalty taker , scored for the City 85 goals v Johns was 54 both great though

Other than the fact that he scored, the one abiding memeory from that Swansea goal for me was that everyone around me was screaming ‘don’t f***ing shoot’ - perhaps an indication that most times he made a complete balls up of it.

Glad he shot that day though. Would be in my top 5 City memories

    Whitts - obviously.

Whittingham's free kicks were great but those two corners in the Carling Cup Final which led to Turner's equaliser were perfection.

I only saw Whittingham. However I've never felt so confident of something happening when he was having a free kick apart from maybe koumas.

I can't believe he didn't score a free kick in nearly 200 games seems insane.

Its obvious Willie Boland was probably the greatest player to wear a city shirt. Kav is a close second.
