    Wales WC Star Ron Hewitt born 90 years ago today

    In 1957 Cardiff City paid £7000 for his services and Ron scored 27 goals in 64 appearances between 1957-59.

    Flint-born Hewitt made 26 appearances as an inside-right for Hereford United in the 1963-64 campaign.
    Groomed at Wolves by the legendary Stan Cullis, Hewitt went on to win five caps for Wales and was one of the Principality's heroes of the 1958 World Cup.

    He made his debut for Wales against Israel in 1958 & the lively Hewitt made three appearances at the World Cup in Sweden where Wales reached the quarter-finals, losing only to eventual winners Brazil through a Pele goal.
    The little Welshman joined Hereford towards the end of an illustrious career in which he also played for Cardiff City, Wrexham, Coventry and Chester.

    Hewitt who died at the age of 73, was an uncle of Everton coach Andy Holden, who also played for Chester and Wales.

    RIP peace work cup star,thoughtful post Fatty Foggon ( wonder what old Alan is doing now ,good player in his day,when he left us he cracked a few goals in for Boro )

    Amazing that 50 years have elapsed since Wales' WC run in Sweden. As for Alan, belly & booze got the better of him.

    I think mentored would have been a better choice of word!

    I remember watching Ron Hewitt play for City at that time. Don't ask me what I had for breakfast today though.
