    I'll nominate Igor Flach, a German diatonic harmonica player, who died aged 42. He had few, if any, peers.

    Someone told me years ago that Bolan had a morbid fear of dying in a car crash and that was the reason he refused to learn to drive, don't know if that's true mind.

    Prince was a massively underrated guitarist & Lemmy a massively underrated bass player whilst they were alive.
    Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) who was "clinically dead for 2 minutes after a heroin overdose.

    I know that they are probably not your "cup of tea" but Depeche Mode are a a very influential band & Dave Gahan a suberb writer, lyricist & front man.
