Interesting this. Shows how the whole thing has evolved.
Also demonstrates that Leeds are not a big club anymore (had to look it up but their capacity is only 4,000 more than ours)
....but for some clubs attendances are vital... Bristol City do ok but a bad season or 2 will see their crowds fall and they’ll also be in deep shit.
Lots more interesting stuff in this article
Wigan are another. Two of the biggest clubs in the land for neighbours but didn't do so bad.
the amount of tv coverage a club gets is directly linked to how big the clubs fanbase actually is
the more people who tune in , the more money the tv companies make.
hence the reason clubs like leeds and the top six in the premier league, are never off the telly...
unless you get a season where another leicester come along and surprise everybody and take the league by storm , the tv coverage will always be based on the size of the clubs fanbase, and the interest they provide nationwide and globally..
I’m in North America. There are 400 million people on the continent. This season Cardiff are live on TV coast to coast a mere 38 times. Leeds aren’t on once.
The direct link you are referring to exists only in your head. There is only one product that drives the revenue and that is The Premier League. Until you’re there you’ll always be little old Leeds 😂
the tv revenue is not split equally , the man utds, chelseas, liverpools of this world get a far bigger slice of the pie than the clubs who finish lower down the table. because the bigger clubs receive far more exposure and coverage, therefore they earn the tv channels more money .
it is not very hard to work out that the man utd , chelsea , liverpools of this world will receive far more coverage than cardiff , brighton or huddersdield this season, because they are bigger and more successful clubs , with far larger fanbases.
Clubs can’t negotiate their own TV deals
Chris is right. All clubs get paid the same basic allowance but you get additional money for each live appearance. All clubs have to be shown at least 10 times but the big clubs are double that.
Chris is talking sense here.
In the championship they often show games where the bigger club is playing away to get the biggest possible audience.
we are not talking about watching the premier league abroad , we are talking about the clubs who receive the most coverage and bring in the most viewers..nationwide . your definition of a big club seems to based on whether you are in the premier league or not..
they are many clubs playing in the premier league this season , who are nowhere near as big as leeds in terms of tv coverage and the amount of viewers or subscribers who tune in.
The big club sell out their stadiums as well.
You mentioned global reach not me. Just thought I’d share a perspective that reaches further than the end of your nose.
TV money is global TV money. You couldn’t pay billions of pounds and have it sustainable only in the UK. Would be commercial suicide.
No one outside the UK (of any consequence) watched the lower leagues on TV which is why the clubs in those divisions get small pickings because their product is cheap.
In terms of finances, the definition of big is being in the Premier League.
I’m not disputing that Leeds would make lots of money if they were in the big league, but they’re not and haven’t served up a good product since we destroyed you in the FA Cup nearly 16 years ago.
So you’re really only left with one avenue (historical size) which is in the words of the late great Jim Bowen is a bit like “look what you could have won”
the premier league is big business globally , but the fanbases of the bigger clubs dictates who is televised more. on your criteria cardiff , huddersfield, burnley, brighton, watford and many more, are bigger clubs than leeds and villa because they receive more money and play premier league football , which is absolute cobblers as most football fans already know.
Villa were in the play off final last season werent they ? - if thats not 'close to promotion' I dont know what is. Also the reason that Leeds were on tv the most last year has nothing to do with Leeds being a 'big club' and everything to do with who they were playing and the fact that Leeds were in freefall and plenty of goals/entertainment was guaranteed because their defence was so useless.
One last point; who cares if the club they support is a big club? No one supports Cardiff because they’re a big club they support them because they’re their local club. Supporting your local team no matter how shit is 100 times more fulfilling than supporting someone just because they’re a big club.
I’ve no problem with anyone supporting who they want but lording the whole big club schtick over people who don’t support a club because of that is just pointless and glib.
