Thread: Peter Whittingham released

    Peter Whittingham released

Whitts has had his Blackburn contract terminated today.

I was disappointed when we let him go but clearly it was the right move.

Guess it might be the end of the line for the man who does what he wants.

What a shame. His career certainly took a dive when he left City.
I believe he still lives in Penarth so perhaps we will see more of Whitts walking his dog on the Esplanade now.

Maybe Newport will pick him up

I never thought he would fit in with NW style of play but did think he had much to offer. Hope he finds somewhere soon, a great servant.

His fitness has been an issue at Blackburn. Add that to his declining lack of pace.

Let’s get him back coaching free kicks.

Would make a great club ambassador, and yes let's use his uniqueness with a dead ball as a development opportunity.

Magic left foot. If he had pace he would have been a PL left winger for most of his career which was his best position for me.

As magic as it was , there were still times it infuriated me when he would fail to get th back ball passed the first man at a corner.

I think we saw the best of Whitts when Jones was our manager. That's when he was at his creative and spectacular best. He had a good season and a half under Mackay until he was rested towards the end of the season (which gave our midfield an energy boost at the time and saw us over the promotion line). Don't think we ever had the same player after that.

As said elsewhere, it would be great to get him back to the club in a coaching capacity. I can't see him dropping down any more levels, where pitches are more shite and midfields are more about dogging it out. He's probably best off retiring.

I still think he's the best (long term) player we ever had. Pure class.

Take a look at Peter King or Don Murray in the history books.

Fair few idiots on here last season reveling in his decline.

He should really be considered among our modern greats.

Agreed unreal player. Think he was sometimes let down by not having the right players or good enough players around him.

I'd say he was the best player in the Championship for a while during the early days of Malky Mackay's time here and we'd never have seen him play for us if he had the pace of, say, a Junior Hoilett - he'd also have won full international caps if he had that bit of pace and acceleration.

A genuine City great and I hope he doesn't now drop down the divisions as he declines - he's 34 a week today, so, maybe, this is a good time for someone who, allegedly, was not that keen on football to call it a day?

Agree with all of that. Great player for us. Thanks for the memories, Whitts.

One of the best players we’ve had. So laid back, he was horizontal. Never celebrated a goal wildly. Just as cool as.
His goal against Boro in our FA cup final run was sublime, and contributed to the best away performance in living memory for me.
Good luck to him in whatever he chooses to do next.

Well said, over 400 games for us and some of the best moments I've ever seen from a City player. I'd have liked to have seen the club honour him with a testimonial, just to say thankyou. Great player.

The goal vs Leicester in the playoffs and Boro in the FA cup are two of my favourite moments following city. Being in the ground for both of them was amazing.

    Re: Peter Whittingham released

He often got clattered during a game, never complained and would lift himself back up, run it off and continue. It was remarkable the number of games he played for us without ever crying off with injury.

... and those pelanties ... they were as good as a goal the moment they were awarded by the referee.

    Did he miss any penalties?

    Loved watching Whitts, brilliant footballer.
Gutted to see him go at the time but maybe Warnock got it right.
Too many amazing moments in his Cardiff City tenure to pick the best.
