Thread: Cricket- England openers

    Cricket- England openers

Not just Jennings but surely Cook under pressure.
Also doesn’t help having no natural no. 3

But who is out there ?

Any mileage in bringing Roy or Hales in ?

There is no chance whatsoever of Hales being brought in as an opener.

His chance of a recall would have been in the middle order but after making himself unavailable for red ball cricket and the Stokes incident there is no way even that will be considered.

I think the likely selection is Rory Burns of Surrey.

No idea whats happened with Hameed. If he shows any sort of form id bring him back.

    Cook should be axed.

Pope, Burns and Vince the only England qualified players averaging over 50 and scored over 500 in division 1.

It’s the top three that are an issue (Root has just come in at 4)

I’d prefer to struggle than bring back Ian Bell. Let’s be honest he’s only being thought of because of his interview the other week.

Didn’t hear that. Just noticed he’s scored a load of runs, although a fair few of those were against Glamorgan 😂

    But I agree, he’s a backwards step.

Hameed did averaging less than 10 for Lancs.

I just think maybe these lads aren’t playing enough 4- day cricket to get consistent scores.

It’s September 1st and still no one is near 1000 runs for the season.

    That’s not goid

I think the 1,000 runs in a season is a benchmark that numerous batsmen used to obtain , but it’s worrisome that it’s becoming less frequent

    Interesting stats.

Same couple stand out there, Burns and Vince.

Mind you , as Burns is a Surrey player he is benefiting from playing at the high scoring Oval.

Ackerman is the other, but he’s South African. Saying that, that little fact has never bothered the England selectors before 😂

Ian Bell is perhaps my favourite England batsman of recent times, but I wonder what his average would look like if you took away his scores (three innings, one double century and two centuries) against the County Championship's whipping boys?

Batsman used to score 1,000 runs by the end of May when cricketers used to play seven days a week - now they play five and people talk about a danger of burn out among top players!

    Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

    Re: Cricket- England openers

It's no coincidence that the trend started around the time the limited overs game became popular, with the aim of getting quick runs and taking big risks.
Traditionally batsmen learnt how to build an innings, just as bowlers toiled to try and remove them using all their cunning.

Cricket and cricketers have changed and not for the better in my view.
