    Windows 7 to Windows 10

I have been given a laptop with Windows 7 on it.
Is it possible to get a free Windows 10 upgrade from anywhere now?
I want to give it to my grandson for his school work.
    thanks (hoping)...

It makes sense to allow people to upgrade.

That's good although lots of people, the less tech savvy, don't want to try backdoor methods just in case.

Windows 10 Home is unusable for me, I had to go with the LTSB version due to the constant updates screwing up my system. I'm still a fan of Windows 7 though, and have fond memories of XP. Linux is probably the best OS for online stuff, and I try to keep Windows permanently offline.

Agreed - Don't bother only makes performance worse.

I got to say been using windows from 3.1 through to 10. I have been using 10 now for a long time, and find it excellent, when I first upgraded to 10. I spent days thoroughly going through every part of it, perhaps if people did the same, then they would stop running it down because they don't know how to use it properly!

I had to roll back to windows 7 as it did not fit my needs

I optimized Win 10 for my specific needs, and the automatic updates which I had turned off still screwed it up!

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10

The major updates to Win 10 can be a pain and time consuming. I like the system but only because I optimise it to work like Win 7

As others have suggested keep Win 7 on it.

Upgrading wasn’t successful in all cases and some computers just can’t make the step up and are left struggling to run 10.

If you've been given the laptop, how old is it? The specs may not be up to win 10 anyway. Not many people give away good laptops...

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10

Rightly or wrongly I blame a Win10 update for the recurring 2-3 second blank screen which always seems to occur when I'm studying something in detail......

Wish I had the time to sort it.

I run Win10; Win7 and WinXP - the latter because I have several programs that are completely incompatible with later versions of Windows.

I still have a server running XP, works well enough

When the earth ends, XP will still be a part of something

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10

Thanks for all your replies and comments, I will leave the Windows 7 on the laptop.
It was given to me for my grandson from another family member.
Can someone remind me of the free office programme I can get rather than Microsoft office?
    Thanks again...
