Thread: Rabbi Matondo - do we have a sell on clause

Rabbi Matondo - do we have a sell on clause

Reportedly moving to Schalke, I guess on loan. Could be some decent money to be made from a sell on clause in the future or is it a Rambo situation all over again?

It's not on loan mate, I think it's the same situation as Jadon Sancho. Good on these kids for being willing to step out of their comfort zone instead of playing u23 football for the next 4 or 5 years.

I don't think we'll get anything from it though

CHO might be off too. It looks like a new trend. Ampadu should leave Chelsea as well.

Its as if these clubs now sign these potential young players as a punt ,( buy 5 potential hopefuls lets see if we get one star ) we can either play loan or sell .

I wonder how many have fallen by the way side or had their development stunted as a consequence of being wrenched from their homes at such an early age , i think its dreadful ,if they have talent their home clubs will see that and develop it anyway .

Needs some rule changes ,not sure what , something like an age and location rule that stops this big brother poaching and allow these youngsters a few years to develop nearer home , to avoid being blinded by the big club coming in for them ,that includes the parents who may get approached and influenced by these big glamour named clubs .

Re: Rabbi Matondo - do we have a sell on clause

The big clubs in this country seem to only want mature players in or near their prime, there doesn't seem much appetite to bring on the younger players. There are a few exceptions, but even players like Wilson struggle to get a game. Ampadu has just turned 18, and he has only played 4 games this season, all in different positions.

Presumably there'll be some sort of solidarity payment at the very least

Overall yes it’s good for England that so many of their youngsters are leaving English football.

However I was referring specifically to rabbi here.

Would he be any closer to the first team here than he is at man city?

The old model is broken. Gone are the days when talented 17-year olds were introduced into the first team, and you would have a fully formed player by the time they were 20. Nowadays their development is stunted, and so many good players fall by the wayside.

As a counterpoint to this theory - has there ever been a time when there were so many talented English and Welsh youngsters coming through? Not in recent history.

The current system is starting to deliver good results.

We have traditionally been really rubbish at including sell on clauses.....

We didn't actually sell him either did we? He signed for them and we got compensation. I'm not sure in that process whether we would even have the opportunity to put a sell on clause in.

Which young Welsh players are actually playing regularly for their parent club?

Does that matter? As long as the players are making the breakthrough somewhere.
Youth prospects in the Wales and England sides are about as healthy as they have ever been, why should we tear up the system that has led to this?
Man city and Chelsea especially invest a lot in top quality coaching and development of youngsters.
Man city had a specially designed climbing frame installed in their academy to improve the balance of the kids coming through as it has been shown to have a big impact on other aspects of the game. I doubt playing for a league 2 team and playing on a dogshit park will be as beneficial. Then when they need game time they go out to clubs on loan to get it.

We loaned in Feeney and Wildchut last season to cover the wings, I'd imagine he'd have at least gotten on the bench at some point

Ampadu was a good player before he joined Chelsea. Wilson is almost 22 and still hasn't played in the Premier League. Woodburn has wasted an entire year due to his loan arrangement, and Matt Smith is talking about looking elsewhere. The only young Welsh player doing well in the Premier League is Brooks, who was shown the door by Man City when he was 16.

They have still all come through the system though.

Can you not remember when Wales were giving caps to players in league 2? Now we are capping youngsters who are excelling at championship level and we are complaining that they aren't getting game time for clubs playing in the champions League?

I'm not sure I get his (WB's) argument. There's the small factor that the players WalesBales mentions who are on the books of Premier League clubs simply aren't good enough to get into the first teams there - if they were good enough at their age, they'd be in the team. Foden has been getting games for the best team in the country despite his age, because of his ability.

Woodburn is nowhere near good enough for Liverpool at present (or Sheffield United, apparently). Wilson may break into the Liverpool team next year - if not, he will go to a smaller PL team.

Ampadu is 18 and getting game time here and there. If he can't break into the squad on more occasions this year, a loan would be good for him.

Brooks had to work his way up to the PL having even played on loan for a non-league team and developed physically later than most of his age group. He wasn't getting anywhere near Man City's team at that age... because he wasn't good enough.

Does WB think Ampadu, Woodburn, Matt Smith etc should be in their club's first teams? If he does, he's deluded.

Yet young British players are moving to the continent to get game time at the highest level. There was a time when promising players would be integrated into the top teams at a young age, but those days are over. I'm very pleased to see gifted young players giving the Big Six the two fingers, and it looks like Hudson-Odoi may be next.
