Not sure he was ever going to be the main man. Messi and Ronaldo aren't normal; as world class as he can be on his day, Bale just isn't consistent enough, particularly when he is injured so often.
No reason he can't stay at Real and be an integral part of their success over the next few years if he could stay fit and find the form he no doubt would if he were to get lengthy periods of being able to play.
