Okay okay. My post may have come across the wrong way and fair play to "PdlR's" witty remark

I am not a Welsh speaker (nor Spanish) but it is not simply because of this fact that I shan't be rushing back to the grange.
The price is the main driver for me. Locality too of course as I don't live anywhere near there.

I find it strange (in a good way) that the Grange, being one of the few pubs left in that part of Cardiff, has attracted your, lets say, up market types, not least because a large part of that community don't drink (nor speak Welsh for that matter).

Themed bars / niche market ones e.g. ones specialising in Real Ales seem to be able to charge what they like and do very well out of it.
Of course upping the price also tends to keep the riff raff out.
    It works in my case

    I agree with you

    £12 = 20 cans OR £12 = 4 pints

That 40p could be spent on a peg to put on your nose to prevent you smelling the stink of piss in the cheaper pubs...

to where are you referring? Or is it a general assumption that if a place sells cheap beer it must be at the lower and of the social scale and /or "stink of piss".

I'd rather have the 4 pints in the pub for the craic and the company of friends acquaintances and people with like-minded sporting affiliations.

Wouldn’t thank you for drinking in the house, would rather a cup of tea and dip a biscuit. It’s the pub, company & banter for me, it’d never be for me drinking a can on the settee watching telly. Don’t even complain about a packed bar and waiting to get served now, there’s too many empty pubs closing.

I'd levy big taxes on supermarket booze , to rejuvenate the brewery trade, too create jobs , and get folk off the settee ,walking and talking to the outside world .

Said this for ages, put £1.50 on a can in a supermarket & knock £1.50 off a pint in a pub. Never happen I know, things have gone too far. Years ago you’d hardly see trays of cans in a shopping trolley, they’ve killed our pubs & no doubt increased the drink problem. Seems to be a lot of people house drinking every night, no last orders, no stop tap, no “I think you’ve had enough”, the brakes are off.

Going out to the pub, meeting up with mates chatting bollocks about the football and anything else, was what it was all about, 27 pence for a pint of Dark in the OA when I first started drinking, home from work on a Friday early quick bath and out to town and catch up with your mates, no e-mails, texts, mobile phones or any of that then. now it seems that everyone stays around the house gets pissed and then heads into town around eleven o'clock times have certainly changed

It's not just a British phenomenon. Breweries and pubs in Germany are closing down and the younger generation appear to be following a healthier lifestyle than their parents as far as alcohol consumption is concerned.

You can go to the pub without getting pissed though, you can even drink alcohol free lager, which is the equivalent of fighting for peace as far as I'm concerned

I'd rather pay a little bit more for a well kept pint than a cheaper pint (lager!!), within reason!!!
I quite like the Cornish Korev in the Cambrian, they have a nice Japanese lager in the Hop Bunker, other than that will seek out either Peroni or Birra Moretti.

Re: pub toilets reeking of piss. Experienced drinkers know whether a pub and its patrons have character (or not) by gauging the stench emanating from the bogs. When entering an unfamiliar boozer they'll head straight for that area to linger for a while as they wrinkle their hooter as a rabbit does to determine its level of unpleasantness. If, and only if, they're satisfied the odour is somewhere between rancid and putrid will they order a drink.

No grog fiend wants to be in the company of wanky types who fret over whether they've placed recycled items in the correct bin or bag, or equally boring kents who'll drone on about some shite they've viewed on BBC2 recently.

I started drinking in the white Hart on James st. Nearly 40 years ago. What is this "last orders" you speak of ?

The White Hart????? It’s forever known as The Last Chance. Great nickname for a pub👍

Went into the OA recently and it was rammed after a Cardiff rugby match with the front part taken over by an Elvis impersonator from the valleys

Not in my day. Cheese and raw onion crust cob was the only food on offer served by Pete the cross eyed barman. Went down a treat with several darks with change from a nicker.
