Thread: How much footballing knowledge and experience does our club have in the boardroom?

How much footballing knowledge and experience does our club have in the boardroom?

It's an honest question. It would appear that Warnock has been invaluable in his experience of what goes on behind the scenes.

But would our board know the intricacies of running youth academies, scouting for players etc? Take big nose Huw Jenkins down west. He's someone who knows the game inside out and has contacts all over the place. What contacts do we have in the footballing world? Any, outside of Tan's other clubs?

Tan always wants people he can trust above anything, but surely it's about time he brought someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of the game and how to oversee everything. If Warnock goes in the summer, would our board know what they are looking for in a new manager?

Lots of questions about those in power at the club.

Their is a serious lack of football expertise at board level. A Director of Football is required to enable the owner, Chairman and Chief Executive to carry out their strategy.

A Head of Recruitment is also necessary to oversee a complete transformation of the way the club does its business in scouting players and dealing with agents.

The club also needs to set out its vision. Are we going to be a vehicle that exists solely to enable VT to recoup some of the losses from his investment? Or are we going to attempt to grow the club and build on the progress made this season which has seen us become the 11th best-supported team in the Premier League?

We do need a Director of Football but it mustn't be Warnock. We have to start playing a more modern style of football if we are to stand a good chance of staying in the Premier League long term ( or getting there at all if we go down this year). The DOF must set the tone for the way we play and employ a Head Coach and create a scouting/recruitment network able to deliver it. Such a radical change in the way we operate would probably take at least two years to bear fruit. The Board needs to be thinking about getting the right person now. I know many people love him but it I think would be a huge mistake if Warnock stayed on beyond the end of this season.

Sometime last year I heard an interview on TalkShite with Simon Jordan who spoke at length on the dangers of clubs with foreign owners with no football expertise at boardroom/senior level. He suggested that such clubs might be subject to exploitation by a wily, experienced manager. He didn’t mention any names but the inference was a certain English club who were and still are under achieving. He was making the case for a trusted Director of Football. What he said, unusually for that station, made a lot of sense.
