Thread: Portugal v Swiss. VARtastic

    Portugal v Swiss. VARtastic

    Well that was interesting.

Switzerland claim a penalty that was not immediately given, Portugal broke and earned a penalty within seconds that was given.

Referee and VAR determined that Swiss claim was valid and took the play back for a Swiss penalty thereby ruling out the penalty awarded to the Portuguese

    Turned into the Ronaldo show.

    Hat trick for Christiano

Switzerland are my second team but that VAR decision was a farce. Could not believe how Switzerland were awarded that pen as they appealed for handball initially from Pépé, but the ref adjudged the coming together between Semedo and Seferovic as a foul...

All for nothing in the end, Portugals second goal saw some great play between Névés, Bernardo and Ronaldo. But fair play to the Swiss, ignoring Xhaka's error for the killer 3rd goal they play clean disciplined football.

At they can moan about VAR now instead of the Ref.

VAR is going to kill the game. It's an absolute farce.

I think it's an improvement. It was the right call yesterday

Bet you £100 that VAR doesn't kill the game of football

Not for armchair fans. Not sure it will enhance the stadium experience.

How much do we have to sacrifice to be "right"? It's going to ruin the emotion of the game, that moment when the goal goes in and you'll immediately stop, look at the ref and say well let's hope VAR doesn't rule this out.

Whether it was right or wrong is immaterial, it was farcical !!!

Takes the game closer to the armchair fan and makes it like a computer game.

This is pretty close to my feelings on VAR.

There was plenty of emotions last night around this decision. Swiss fans complaining their pen shout wasn't given, then horror as there's a stonewall pen at the other end which suddenly turns to elation as the pen is ruled out and the original one given and then scored.
How can you say that's taking emotions out of the game? There's a 5 minute rollercoaster of emotions that nicely encapsulates the experience of a football fan and shows why it is so popular compared to other sports that don't have these highs and lows

    1. Nobody in the ground has any clue what's going on
    2. You score, you go nuts. It's the best feeling in the world. VAR check, flat as a pancake. The goal is confirmed and you're like, oh right... great.

It is solely for TV. Also how far do you want to go back? Where do you stop? It's ruined rugby league and union too.

So you don't lose anything, you still get the best feeling in the world, then get a bonus "oh great"

But you'll lose that feeling of euphoria because you have to check it. It's like cricket, you get the LBW and then you have to see if its out on DRS.

If it was for every goal I'd understand but it's going to be once in a blue moon so I don't really get why people are so up in arms about it

surely if the Swiss penalty was given the Portuguese one should have stood as well - after all the player who infringed did so when the game was "in play"?

You’ve opened a can of worms here.

What if a Portuguese player would have been brought down, when through on goal. Red card offence, would the red card be rescinded????

What constitutes the ball is not in play !!!

Exactly, player goes through in offside position, lino plays on waiting for var, defender commits a foul he doesn`t have to make and gets sent off. or is there a rule in place for that scenario.

    He wouldn't be sent off.

But do linos play on waiting for VAR?

So, a player can make a thigh high tackle, jabbing his studs into another players leg, but he’s not sent off because they’re going back 60 seconds for a supposed pelanty offence !!

But it isn't once in a blue moon, is it? It's used all the time.

    According to this article
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42781236

In the 804 matches there were 3,947 checks for possible reviewable incidents. That's basically 5 VAR decisions every game.

If it's violent play then I guess the red would still stand. Just like if the ball is dead for any other reason
