Thread: King's Road, Cardiff

    Re: King's Road, Cardiff

I used to live on the City end of Ryder Street. Some local yuppys called it Pontcanna yet it felt like Canton as it was close to Cowbridge Rd East. However, the postal address was actually Riverside.

As I stated earlier in the thread the post code system was an arbitrary one introduced by the Post Office in order to deliver mail. It is not authoritative as far as toponyms are concerned.

But newtown was only ever about 6 or 7 streets in reality. Built specially (new) by the Marquis of Bute to house the families of men building the Queen Alexandra dock. Now mostly gone but the old Vulcan pub was allegedly in Newtown.

Yes, the Vulcan was originally on Whitmore lane - a very notorious street in Victorian times.

Great pub back in the day. Shame to see it close. Wasn’t it meant to be rebuilt in St Fagans?

    I think there's a bit of a back log

Quite a difficult beach to get to.

    Beautiful part of the world.

Apologies for being miles off topic.
By the way if you live just off the M1, are you a southerner or northerner?
    Southerner 😁🤔
Great pub in Porthtowan, called the Porpoise.

Sources inform me that the brickwork etc that was the Vulcan is in its intended position in St Fagans but there is a collection going on to pay for it to be reassembled and it’s been this way ever since it was disassembled and moved a couple of years ago

A list of Licensed premises that I have, dated 1903, shows the Vulcan as being in ADAM Street and the earliest record of it being there is 1853

That part of Adam street was originally Whitmore lane, which, with the neighbouring Charlotte Street was a hive of brothels, pubs and petty criminals.
I'm not sure when it became Adam street but considerably later than 1853 I think

Have you got any maps prior to 1801 when the population of Cardiff was 1,870?

I found this one from 1610

In think I have one from the 18th C but I'd have to look.

That's the John Speed map from 1610 above. Interestingly it was only 3 years after the floods of 1607 (1606 in pre Gregorian calendar). I think at Mary's may have been a ruin by the time of this map

Maybe because the estate is named after it (or it's predecessor) and not the other way round?
