Thread: VPN advice needed.

  1. #1

    VPN advice needed.

I have a standard router provided by my ISP. Is there a way of changing the settings so it connects via a VPN on all connections ? I have a few fire sticks and TV’s which I would like to run through the VPN.

Or is it best to buy some sort of inbetween device and direct everything through that ?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

It depends on the router, e.g, the bt smarthub doesn’t allow this. best to google your router model and check.

Even if the router has the capability to do it, your isp will prob have custom firmware to disable the option as they don’t like you doing this.

You could do it with something like a draytek router, they are pricey but are designed for small business so are very configurable.

I doubt your ISP provided router will let you install a VPN on it.
I had to buy another router, a Netgear N300 router. I checked the webpage of my VPN provider to find a suitable router that could install a VPN and got one they recommended.
Even then, it didn’t work out of the box. I had to flash it with software called
“Tomato” which allowed me to install my VPN account onto the router.
Not sure if there was an easier way. I let myself be guided by the support offered by my VPN provider.
I then had to direct any devices through that VPN router in order to use the VPN. A device talking to my main ISP provider router would only work as normal. i.e. without a VPN.

    Hopefully that makes sense.

Yes I think I’m with you. Am I correct in saying you replaced your ISP router with this new one ?

Yeah it’s a EE router which is effectively a BT smart hub.

No. Still have my ISP router as it was installed when I first had it.
I have loads of homeplugs around the place to get strong internet signal through the house. I got them for online gaming on the PS3 and not found anything better for the price.
I’ve got a second router, with VPN installed, running off a homeplug in the living room. I have the smart tv hardwired to this router allowing me to run the tv though a VPN.

Great. Taffster. Think I’m with you. I’ll buy one of those routers. Connect the new router to my existing one via Ethernet and then connect wirelessly to the new VPN router.

    Before you splash the cash....

Check the firmware on the router.
Does it allow you to install a VPN straight out of the box? Or does it need to be flashed with different software first?
    Check with your VPN provider.

Read up on how you install the VPN. Again, check your VPN’s website support page to see what you need to do.

Make sure the router you get is compatible. Not all will allow a VPN to be installed on it. It maybe that only a limited number of routers with the right firmware will let your VPN be installed on it.

    Re: VPN advice needed.

You could also look at dd-wrt or tomato firmware in case they have options for your router, in which case you may not need to buy a new router at all.

Edit: Also, if you run the vpn through the router you likely won't be able to access any sites that block many vpns e.g. Netflix/bbc iPlayer (though dd-wrt at least has a relatively easy way of turning this on and off as necessary - not sure about tomato as I've not used it)

Just pop around to Sludge's if you want to watch some dodgy porn.

That’s interesting. Seems a cheaper option.
