    Doesn't really do for me.

    I don't know his background.

If we are specifically talking about what he said that got him suspended, stay.

If there is a history of other offences then I would have another think.

Doesn't help that he looks evil.

Yes he does and sound like an evil dictator, certainly very passionate in his belief.

Like you I don't know a lot about Chris Williamson's past comments or actions.

However, the incident he was suspended for, and the words he used (and subsequently clarified), should not have resulted in suspension, let alone the expulsion that the Labour PLP right, the LFI and their media supporters are demanding. It is a witch hunt, and a proxy complaint for the anti-Corbyn agenda.

Williamson said two things at that member meeting in Sheffield - that he thought the leadership had caved in too far to a camapign that was not justified by the evidence of anti-semitism in the Labour Party (and that it was motivated by the twin objectives of changing the leadership and shutting down criticism of Israel), and also that there is a real problem of anti-semitism that must be rooted out, just not on the scale that was claimed or inherent in support for Palestinian rights. I agree with him based on the stories and evidence that have found their way out into the public. I have seen some horrific examples of anti-semitic tropes and abuse from Labour Party members. I have seen a lot of examples of anti-Zionism labelled anti-semitism (often from Jewish critics) and I have seen descriptions of complaints and allegations put forward by Margaret Hodge and others that are presented as if from Labour Party members but are not - they are often from neo-Nazis (and several of them have been jailed in the last few years)

A few of the MPs who signed the letter today disappoint me, as I have some respect for them in other ways. But most are the 'usual suspects' who are heading into their fourth year of trying to force Corbyn out - with Watson, Hodge, Phillips and the other remaining leading figures from the Labour Friends Of Israel (the ones that didn't defect) at the forefront.

In my opinion it stinks - but it would not surprise me to see the Labour leadership cave in again and kick Williamson out. It has made concessions it didn't believe in before under similar co-ordinated pressure (like adopting all the examples to the IHRA definition of anti-semitism that have nothing to do with Jews and Jewishness and everything to do with protecting the state of Israel from criticism or non-violent resistance, like BDS).

I heard and saw Chris Williamson on a few occasions when he was brought in to face the media to support the Corbyn line and never thought much one way or another of him. It's funny how you remember these things though - I can recall hearing him interviewed on 5 Live as I was driving down to one of our night games last season (I believe it was Wolves) and thinking what a odious person he is, he's lost quite a few votes for Labour there by the time he had finished. He was talking about a Labour colleague he had some sort of feud with and his sneering and superior tone came as a real shock - maybe I shouldn't be so influenced by a one off interview, but I certainly wouldn't vote for him if I was one of his constituents because of it.

I don't know why you bother asking if you are going to approach the thread with such a childish attitude.

Should have realised it wasn't a genuine attempt to start a discussion when I saw who the OP was.

Re: Chris Williamson should he stay or go

Looks like the pack have got their way. It seems that Williamson is re-suspended and likely to be referred to the NCC (not a friend of Corbyn) and to have the whip removed for a year - if he isn't expelled before that.

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics...ris-williamson

I hadn't realised before (because the press never make it clear) that the original suspension of Chris Williamson was on the grounds of bringing the party into disrepute. Not for antisemitic statements or actions. This was also the case in the expulsion of Marc Wadsworth and others who (in his case) was falsely accused of antisemtic statements, but were subsequently kicked out for upsetting Ruth Smeeth MP and her minders (including Stephen Kinnock) when he called her out for feeding anti-Labour stories to the Daily Telegraph.

Williamson may be a nasty piece of work, and he may be guilty of antisemitism at another time (I don't know if either of those things are true - although the radio interview Paul reported suggests he may be his own worst enemy), but the incident he was suspended for was essentially down to him clumsily defending Labour Party members and processes against internal and external critics. Whether he is right or wrong it is bizarre that he is jusdged to have brought the party into disrepute through that.

Meanwhile one of the chief witch-hunters can corner the Leader of the party in Westminster (in front of a gaggle of pre-selected press) and accuse him of being 'a ****ing racist and antisemite'. She gets a suspension of days and is then welcomed back into the party and dozens of TV studios with open arms. That clearly isn't bringing the party into disrepute!

Well, at least 'life on mars' will be happy.

It's strange for a group of regular contributors that have quite an extensive knowledge of other political matters we get comments like :
I don't know much of him to comment.
Then you get comments like witch hunters ( bit of a pretence me thinks)

One of our better political contributors summed him up perfectly, as an odious person .

In as much as I dislike Boris, Trump , I also dislike people like Williamson , as a socialist at heart , his end game sadly will result in a Labour party never being elected .

    Wake up Labour

I think it is a witch hunt. I think the real targets are Corbyn and crushing opposition to Israel's policies and role.

At the same time Chris Williamson may be a bad person (I don't know - not seen any evidence either way) but what he is charged with seems to me to be ludicrous. No pretence - just an opinion based on what I have seen and read. You claim to be a socialist, but have particularly praised Jess Phillips, Margaret Hodge and the opium-smoking spy who got binned from the Tory leadership election. I don't get that - they are not socialists.

It is totally possible to see an ideological struggle and party civil war playing out in front of our eyes (and take sides in that) without going all Splott Dai on the messageboard.

What saddens me is that getting rid of Corbyn is more important to this bunch than getting rid of this government who has harmed so many people they pretend to care about.

Well I'm guessing I may not be what's deemed as socialist , I am then social minded and true to deliver that in my life for caring for others less fortunate .

I dont recognize the current Labour leadership or like some of its policies and behaviors.

Yes I like Jess Phillips ,Yvette Cooper,Margaret Hodge , they in their work are socialist ,it just doesn't fit the current flavour , whcih does appears to be in some sort of a bubble dragged in from the 70's ,and in my view allowed some behaviors to be created by some of its followers like Williamson , Livingstone , young Prescott ,Jared O'Mara, Fiona Onasanya , Keith Vaz ,there's been too many for liking , I always had the nasty Tories as the real bad boys.

I'm guessing the opium-smoking spy you refer too is Rory Stewart , we might be shocked how many MP's who have blown or sucked something through an orifice , I did witness strange toilet behaviors at ( yes) socialists type conferences, thankfully ts not just the right elite who "Change my pitch up / Smack my bitch up",

    for balance :

Yep fully agreed on this. There is a greater hatred of Corbyn than the likes of Johnson etc .

Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of what's happened to Chris Williamson, what's happened this week has only confirmed many people's impression that this most incompetent of Governments is being opposed by a party that is, currently, as inept as Diana Ross taking a penalty .
